283. The Phenomena Accompanying
the Death of Christ
(Mt 27:51-56, Mk 15:38-41, Lk 23:45, 47-49) |
Mt 27:51-56
51Behold,
the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. The earth
quaked and the rocks were split. 52The tombs were opened, and
many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53and
coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered into the holy
city and appeared to many. 54Now the centurion, and those who
were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake, and the things
that were done, feared exceedingly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God.”
55Many
women were there watching from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee,
serving him. 56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of
James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. |
Mk 15:38-41
38The
veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. 39When
the centurion, who stood by opposite him, saw that he cried out like this
and breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
40There
were also women watching from afar, among whom were both Mary Magdalene, and
Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; 41who,
when he was in Galilee, followed him, and served him; and many other women
who came up with him to Jerusalem. |
Lk 23:45
a,
47-49
45The
sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.
47When
the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this
was a righteous man.” 48All the multitudes that came together to
see this, when they saw the things that were done, returned home beating
their breasts. 49All his acquaintances, and the women who
followed with him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. |

284. The Bones of the Malefactors are Broken
Friday Afternoon Before 9 P.M.
(Jn 19:31-37)
|
Jn 19:31-37
31Therefore
the Jews, because it was the Preparation Day, so that the bodies wouldn’t
remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special one)
b, asked of Pilate that their legs
might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32Therefore
the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was
crucified with him; 33but when they came to Jesus, and saw that
he was already dead, they didn’t break his legs. 34However one of
the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water
came out. 35He who has seen has testified, and his testimony is
true. He knows that he tells the truth, that you may believe. 36For
these things happened, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, “A bone of him
will not be broken.”
37Again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they
pierced.”

285. The Burial of Jesus in the Tomb of Joseph of Arimathea
Late Friday Afternoon Before 6 P.M.
(Mt
27:57-60, Mk 15:42-46, Lk 23:50-54, Jn 19:38-42)
|
Mt
27:57-60
57When
evening had come, a rich man from Arimathaea, named Joseph, who himself was
also Jesus’ disciple came. 58This man went to Pilate, and asked
for Jesus’ body. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given up. 59Joseph
took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60and laid
it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out in the rock, and he rolled a
great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed. |
Mk
15:42-46
42When
evening had now come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day
before the Sabbath, 43Joseph of Arimathaea, a prominent council
member who also himself was looking for the Kingdom of God, came. He boldly
went in to Pilate, and asked for Jesus’ body. 44Pilate marveled
if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether
he had been dead long. 45When he found out from the centurion, he
granted the body to Joseph. 46He bought a linen cloth, and taking
him down, wound him in the linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb which had
been cut out of a rock. He rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
|
Lk 23:50-54
50Behold,
a man named Joseph, who was a member of the council, a good and righteous
man 51(he had not consented to their counsel and deed), from
Arimathaea, a city of the Jews, who was also waiting for the Kingdom of God:
52this man went to Pilate, and asked for Jesus’ body. 53He
took it down, and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb that
was cut in stone, where no one had ever been laid. 54It was the
day of the Preparation, and the Sabbath was drawing near. |
Jn 19:38-42
38After
these things, Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly
for fear of the Jews, asked of Pilate that he might take away Jesus’ body.
Pilate gave him permission. He came therefore and took away his body.
39Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came bringing a
mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.
40So they took Jesus’ body, and bound it in linen cloths with the
spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41Now in the place
where he was crucified there was a garden. In the garden was a new tomb in
which no man had ever yet been laid. 42Then because of the Jews’
Preparation Day (for the tomb was near at hand) they laid Jesus there.

27:62-66
62Now

c, the chief priests and the Pharisees
were gathered together to Pilate, 63saying, “Sir, we remember
what that deceiver said while he was still alive: ‘After three days I will
rise again.’ 64Command therefore that the tomb be made secure
until the third day, lest perhaps his disciples come at night and steal him
away, and tell the people, ‘He is risen from the dead;’ and the last
deception will be worse than the first.”
65Pilate
said to them, “You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66So
they went with the guard and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone. |
