83. The Command to Cross over to the Other Side
(Mt 8:18, Mk 4:35, Lk 8:22)
On the evening of the day of parables by the Sea of
Galilee a |
Mt 8:18

18Now when Jesus saw great multitudes around
him, he gave the order to depart to the other side. |
Mk 4:35
35On
that day, when evening had come, he said to them,
“Let’s go over to the other side.” |
Lk 8:22
22Now
it happened on one of those days, that he entered into a boat, himself and
his disciples, and he said to them, “Let’s go over
to the other side of the lake.” So they launched out.

84. Three Applicants for Discipleship
(Mt 8:19-22, Lk 9:57-62)
Same day |
Mt 8:19-22
19A scribe came, and said to him, “Teacher,
I will follow you wherever you go.”
20Jesus said to him,
“The foxes have holes, and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of
Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
21Another of his disciples said to him,
“Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.”
22But Jesus said to him,
“Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own
dead.” |
[Lk 9:57-62]
c
57As they went on the way, a certain man
said to him, “I want to follow you wherever you go, Lord.”
58Jesus said to him,
“The foxes have holes, and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of
Man has no place to lay his head.”
59He said to another,
“Follow me!”
But he said, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my
father.”
60But Jesus said to him,
“Leave the dead to bury their own dead, but you go
and announce the Kingdom of God.”
61Another also said, “I want to follow you,
Lord, but first allow me to bid farewell to those who are at my house.”
62But Jesus said to him,
“No one, having put his hand to the plow, and
looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God.” |

85. The Stilling of the Tempest
(Mt 8:23-27, Mk 4:36-41, Lk 8:23-25)
Sea of Galilee. Same day |
Mt 8:23-27
23When he got into a boat, his disciples
followed him. 24Behold, a violent storm came up on the sea, so
much that the boat was covered with the waves, but he was asleep. 25They
came to him, and woke him up, saying, “Save us, Lord! We are dying!”
26He said to them,
“Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked
the wind and the sea, and there was a great calm.
27The men marveled, saying, “What kind of
man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” |
Mk 4:36-41
36Leaving the multitude, they took him with
them, even as he was, in the boat. Other small boats were also with him.
37A big wind storm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so
much that the boat was already filled. 38He himself was in the
stern, asleep on the cushion, and they woke him up, and told him, “Teacher,
don’t you care that we are dying?”
39He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said
to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind
ceased, and there was a great calm. 40He said to them,
“Why are you so afraid? How is it that you have no
faith?”
41They were greatly afraid, and said to one
another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” |
Lk 8:23-25
23But
as they sailed, he fell asleep. A wind storm came down on the lake, and they
were taking on dangerous amounts of water. 24They came to him,
and awoke him, saying, “Master, master, we are dying!” He awoke, and rebuked
the wind and the raging of the water, and they ceased, and it was calm.
25He said to them, “Where is your faith?”
Being afraid they marveled, saying one to another, “Who is this, then, that
he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?” |

NU reads “Gadarenes” |
Mk 5:1
1They
came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. |
Lk 8:26
26They arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is
opposite Galilee. |
ii. The Two Demoniacs f |
Mt 8:28b-29
28When
he came to the other side, into the country of the Gergesenes,
two people possessed by demons met him there, coming out of the
tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that nobody could pass that way. 29Behold,
they cried out, saying, “What do we have to do with you, Jesus, Son of
God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”
8:28
NU reads “Gadarenes” |
Mk 5:2-7
2When he had come out
of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an
unclean spirit, 3who had his dwelling in the tombs. Nobody
could bind him any more, not even with chains, 4because he
had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been
torn apart by him, and the fetters broken in pieces. Nobody had the
strength to tame him. 5Always, night and day, in the tombs
and in the mountains, he was crying out, and cutting himself with
stones. 6When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and bowed down
to him, 7and crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What
have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the Most High God? I adjure you
by God, don’t torment me.” |
Lk 8:27-28
27When
Jesus stepped ashore, a certain man out of the city who had demons for a
long time met him. He wore no clothes, and didn’t live in a house, but
in the tombs. 28When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell
down before him, and with a loud voice said, “What do I have to do with
you, Jesus, you Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torment me!”
|
iii. "My Name Is Legion" |
Mk 5:8-9
8For he said to
him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
9He asked him,
“What is your name?”
He said to him, “My name is Legion, for we are
many.” |
Lk 8:29-30
29For Jesus was commanding the unclean
spirit to come out of the man. For the unclean spirit had often seized
the man. He was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters.
Breaking the bands apart, he was driven by the demon into the desert.
30Jesus asked him,
“What is your name?”
He said, “Legion,” for many
demons had entered into him. |
iv. The Demons Enter Swine |
Mt 8:30-32
30Now there was a herd of many pigs
feeding far away from them. 31The demons begged him, saying,
“If you cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of pigs.”
32He said to them,
“Go!”
They came out, and went into the
herd of pigs: and behold, the whole herd of pigs rushed down the cliff
into the sea, and died in the water. |
Mk 5:10-13
10He begged him much that he would not
send them away out of the country. 11Now there was on the
mountainside a great herd of pigs feeding. 12All the demons
begged him, saying, “Send us into the pigs, that we may enter into
them.”
13At
once Jesus gave them permission. The unclean spirits came out and
entered into the pigs. The herd of about two thousand rushed down the
steep bank into the sea, and they were drowned in the sea. |
Lk 8:31-33
31They
begged him that he would not command them to go into the abyss. 32Now
there was there a herd of many pigs feeding on the mountain, and they
begged him that he would allow them to enter into those. He allowed
them. 33The demons came out from the man, and entered into
the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake, and
were drowned. |
v. The Sequel |
Mt 8:33-34
33Those who fed them fled, and went away
into the city, and told everything, including what happened to those who
were possessed with demons. 34Behold, all the city came out
to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged that he would depart from
their borders. |
Mk 5:14-17
14Those who fed them fled, and told it
in the city and in the country.
The people came to see what it was that had
happened. 15They came to Jesus, and saw him who had been
possessed by demons sitting, clothed, and in his right mind, even him
who had the legion; and they were afraid. 16Those who saw it
declared to them how it happened to him who was possessed by demons, and
about the pigs. 17They began to beg him to depart from their
region. |
Lk 8:34-37
34When those who fed them saw what had
happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country.
35People
went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus, and found the man
from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and
in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36Those who saw it
told them how he who had been possessed by demons was healed. 37All
the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to
depart from them, for they were very much afraid. He entered into the
boat, and returned. |
vi. "Tell How Great Things The Lord Hath Done For Thee" |
Mt 9:1
1He
entered into a boat, and crossed over, and came into his own city.
g |
Mk 5:18-21
18As he was entering into the
boat, he who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be
with him. 19He didn’t allow him, but said to him,
“Go to your house, to your friends, and tell
them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how he had mercy
on you.”
20He went his way, and began to proclaim
in Decapolis how Jesus had done great things for him, and everyone
marveled.
21When
Jesus had crossed back over in the boat to the other side, a great
multitude was gathered to him; and he was by the sea. |
Lk 8:38-40
38But the man from whom the demons had
gone out begged him that he might go with him, but Jesus sent him away,
saying, 39“Return to your house, and
declare what great things God has done for you.” He went his way,
proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done
for him.
40It
happened, when Jesus returned, that the multitude welcomed him, for they
were all waiting for him. |

87. Christ Raises the Daughter of Jairus and Heals
the Woman with the Issue of Blood
(Mt 9:18-26, Mk 5:22-43, Lk 8:41-56)
In Capernaum |
i. Jairus |
Mt 9:18-19
18While he told these things
h to them, behold, a ruler came and
worshiped him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your
hand on her, and she will live.”
19Jesus
got up and followed him, as did his disciples. |
Mk 5:22-24
22Behold, one of the rulers of the
synagogue, Jairus by name, came; and seeing him, he fell at his feet,
23and begged him much, saying, “My little daughter is at the
point of death. Please come and lay your hands on her, that she may be
made healthy, and live.”
24He
went with him, and a great multitude followed him, and they pressed upon
him on all sides. |
Lk 8:41-42
41Behold,
there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. He
fell down at Jesus’ feet, and begged him to come into his house, 42for
he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.
But as he went, the multitudes pressed against him. |
ii. The Woman With The Issue Of Blood |
Mt 9:20-21
20Behold, a woman who had an issue of
blood for twelve years came behind him, and touched the fringe
of his garment; 21for she said within herself, “If I just
touch his garment, I will be made well.”
9:20
or, tassel |
Mk 5:25-29
25A certain woman, who had an issue of
blood for twelve years, 26and had suffered many things by
many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but
rather grew worse, 27having heard the things concerning
Jesus, came up behind him in the crowd, and touched his clothes. 28For
she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be made well.” 29Immediately
the flow of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she
was healed of her affliction. |
Lk 8:43-44
43A
woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her
living on physicians, and could not be healed by any, 44came
behind him, and touched the fringe
of his cloak, and immediately the flow of her blood stopped.
8:44
or, tassel |
iii. "Who Touched Me?" |
Mt 9:22
22But Jesus, turning around and seeing
her, said, “Daughter, cheer up! Your faith has
made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour. |
Mk 5:30-34
30Immediately Jesus, perceiving in
himself that the power had gone out from him, turned around in the
crowd, and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31His disciples said to him, “You see
the multitude pressing against you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’”
32He looked around to see her who had
done this thing. 33But the woman, fearing and trembling,
knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him, and
told him all the truth.
34He said to her,
“Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in
peace, and be cured of your disease.” |
Lk 8:45-48
45Jesus said,
“Who touched me?”
When all denied it, Peter and those with him said,
“Master, the multitudes press and jostle you, and you say,
‘Who touched me?’”
46But Jesus said,
“Someone did touch me, for I perceived that
power has gone out of me.” 47When the woman saw that
she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him
declared to him in the presence of all the people the reason why she had
touched him, and how she was healed immediately. 48He said to
her, “Daughter, cheer up. Your faith has made
you well. Go in peace.” |
iv. "Talitha, Cumi" |
Mt 9:23-26
23When Jesus came into the ruler’s
house, and saw the flute players, and the crowd in noisy disorder,
24he said to them, “Make room, because the
girl isn’t dead, but sleeping.”
They were ridiculing him. 25But
when the crowd was put out, he entered in, took her by the hand, and the
girl arose. 26The report of this went out into all that land.
|
Mk 5:35-43
35While he was still speaking, they came
from the synagogue ruler’s house saying, “Your daughter is dead. Why
bother the Teacher any more?”
36But Jesus, when he heard the message
spoken, immediately said to the ruler of the synagogue,
“Don’t be afraid, only believe.” 37He
allowed no one to follow him, except Peter, James, and John the brother
of James. 38He came to the synagogue ruler’s house, and he
saw an uproar, weeping, and great wailing. 39When he had
entered in, he said to them, “Why do you make an
uproar and weep? The child is not dead, but is asleep.”
40They ridiculed him. But he, having put
them all out, took the father of the child and her mother and those who
were with him, and went in where the child was lying. 41Taking
the child by the hand, he said to her, “Talitha
cumi;” which means, being interpreted,
“Girl, I tell you, get up.” 42Immediately the girl
rose up, and walked, for she was twelve years old. They were amazed with
great amazement. 43He strictly ordered them that no one
should know this, and commanded that something should be given to her to
eat. |
Lk 8:49-56
49While he still spoke, one from the
ruler of the synagogue’s house came, saying to him, “Your daughter is
dead. Don’t trouble the Teacher.”
50But Jesus hearing it, answered him,
“Don’t be afraid. Only believe, and she will be
healed.”
51When he came to the house, he didn’t
allow anyone to enter in, except Peter, John, James, the father of the
child, and her mother. 52All were weeping and mourning her,
but he said, “Don’t weep. She isn’t dead, but
sleeping.”
53They were ridiculing him, knowing that
she was dead. 54But he put them all outside, and taking her
by the hand, he called, saying, “Child, arise!”
55Her spirit returned, and she rose up immediately. He
commanded that something be given to her to eat. 56Her
parents were amazed, but he commanded them to tell no one what had been
done. |

88. Two Blind Men Healed
(Mt 9:27-31)
At Capernaum |
Mt 9:27-31
27As Jesus passed by from there, two blind
men followed him, calling out and saying, “Have mercy on us, son of David!”
28When he had come into the house, the blind
men came to him. Jesus said to them, “Do you believe
that I am able to do this?”
They told him, “Yes, Lord.”
29Then he touched their eyes, saying,
“According to your faith be it done to you.”
30Their eyes were opened. Jesus strictly commanded them, saying,
“See that no one knows about this.” 31But
they went out and spread abroad his fame in all that land. |

(Mt 9:32-34) |
Mt 9:32-34
32As they went out, behold, a mute man who
was demon possessed was brought to him. 33When the demon was cast

has ever been seen in Israel!”
34But the Pharisees said, “By the prince of

Footnotes
a) All events of Nos. 79-85 transpired on the
same day. See No. 79, note 2.
b) A return to the natural
order of Matthew. The multitude from which Jesus escapes in Mark's narrative
(4:36) is that gathered on the shore in connection with the parable
discourse. In agreement with Matthew and Luke this is followed by the
crossing of the lake, the stilling of the tempest, and the Gadarene journey.
From this it seems to follow that the whole section in Matt. 11:2.30;
12:22.50; and 13:1-53 has been related out of its chronological order, and
we therefore now return to Matt. 8:18 ft.
c) Transposed. See also No. 144. The placing
of the incident in Luke seems to indicate a loose arrangement, though what
is related here may have happened again, at a later time.
d) There has been a long
controversy regarding both site and text. We are satisfied with the
explanation by which the "discrepancies" are cleared up as follows:
1. All three readings, Gerasenes.
Gergesenes, and Gadarenes, are correct. The first two refer to the site
or city and the third to the district to which the site belonged.
2. The discovery of a site nearly
opposite the Plain of Gennesaret under various names: Kersa, Chersa,
Gersa, or Gerasa, (Not to be confounded with the Gerasa of Gilead)
completely accounts for the term "Gergesenes" and all the details of the
miracle. It has been said that the term "Gergesenes" was introduced into
the text. But it is to be remembered that Matthew lived on the shores of
the lake and was likely to know its topography.
e) Because the demoniac saw Jesus afar off,
Mark 5:6. Daytime as against the view that the arrival of Jesus took place
on the same evening which would make the miracle at Chersa a night scene.
f) Thus Matthew. Mark and Luke single out and
describe one, probably as the more grievously afflicted and the spokesman of
the two.
g) Here follows in the order
of Matthew:
|
No. 62. The Paralytic
Healed. |
Matthew 9:2-8 |
|
No. 63, 64. Matthew
Called. |
9-13 |
|
No. 65. A Question
about Fasting. |
14-15 |
|
No. 66. A Parable:
New Wine and New Bottles |
16-17 |
|
All in
order, but transposed as compared with Mark and Luke. |
h) There are some
difficulties as to the proper sequence of events on account of the words
"while He spake these things" in verse 18 which seems to compel a connection
with verse 17 (following section No. 66). However, since Matthew is not
chronological in this part of his Gospel, it is best to follow the order of
Mark and Luke, but to bear in mind that the feast previously referred to
(No. 64) and there related to bring together everything that concerns
Levi-Matthew personally, may have taken place at this time.
