Chapter 19

THE CONVERSATIONS OF JESUS WITH INDIVIDUALS

There are twenty-one sets of the words of Jesus in which He carried conversations with individuals (always one or a stated number, not those He spoke to groups. such as the Jews. See Chapter 13.1 Seven of these sets 17 x 7) are His words to the Twelve Apostles. The other fourteen are His words to other persons.

I. The Disciples Individually

MATTHEW

1. Follow me. Matt. 9:9

ANDREW AND ANOTHER DISCIPLE

2. Come and see. John 1:39.

THOMAS

3. Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. John 20:27.

4. Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. John 20:29.

PHILIP

5. Follow me. John 1:43.

6. Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? John 6:5.

7. Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father. John 14:9.

 
II. The Disciples Individually—Group II

NATHANAEL

1. Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! John 1:47.

2. Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. John 1:48.

3. Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, helievest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. John 1:50.

4. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. John 1:51.

JUDAS

5. That thou doest, do quickly. John 13:27.

6. Thou hast said. Matt. 26:25.

JUDAS, NOT ISCARIOT

7. If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. John 14:23-24.

 
III. James and John and Their Mother

1. What wilt thou? Matt. 20:21.

2. Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? Matt. 20:22.

3. Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. Matt 20:23.

4. Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me. Mark 9:39.

5. Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us. Luke 9:50.

6. Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. Luke 9:55-56.

7. Behold thy mother! John 19:27.

 
IV. Peter

1. Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas. John 1:42.

2. Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. Matt. 4:19.

3. Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. Luke 5:4.

4. Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. Luke 5:10

5. Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood bath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. Matt. 16:17.

6. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Matt. 16:19.

7. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matt. 16:18.

 
V. Peter—Group II—Peter Receiving Teaching

1. What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? Matt. 17:25.

2. Then are the children free. Matt. 17:26.

3. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee. Matt. 17:27.

4. Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. Matt. 16:23.

5. What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know here-after. John 13:7.

6. If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. John 13:8.

7. He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit! and ye are clean, but not all. John 13:10

 
VI. Peter—Group III—Peter's Failure

1. Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: Luke 22:31.

2. But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. Luke 22:32.

3. Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour? Mark 14:37.

4. Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice. John 13:38.

5. Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. Mark 14:30.

6. Suffer ye thus far. Luke 22:51.

7. Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? John 18:11.

 
VII. Peter—Group IV—Peter's Reinstatement

1. Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Matt. 26:52.

2. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? Matt. 26:53-54.

3. Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? . . . Feed my lambs. John 21:15.

4. Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? . . . Feed my sheep. John 21:16-17.

5. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. John 21:18.

6. Follow me. John 21:19.

7. If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me. John 21:22.

 
VIII. John the Baptist

1. Go and show John again those things which ye do hear and see. Matt. 11:4.

2. The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. Matt. 11:5.

3. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. Matt. 11:6.

4. What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. Matt. 11:7-8.

5. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. Matt. 11:9.

6. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Matt. 11:10.

7. Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there bath not risen a greater than John the Baptist; not-withstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. Matt. 11:11.

 
IX. John the Baptist—Group II

1. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. Matt. 11:12.

2. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. Matt. 11:13.

3. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. Matt. 11:14.

4. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Matt. 11:15.

5. But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. Matt. 11:16-17.

6. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. Matt. 11:18.

7. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children. Matt. 11:19.

 
X. John the Baptist—Group III

1. If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. John 5:31.

2. There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. John 5:32.

3. Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. John 5:33.

4. But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. John 5:34.

5. He was a burning and a shining light. John 5:35.

6. And ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. John 5:35.

7. But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. John 5:36.

 
XI. John the Baptist—Group IV

1. Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. Matt. 17:11.

2. But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. Matt. 17:12.

3. Suffer it to he so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Matt. 3:15.

4. I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me. Mark 11:29-30.

5. The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. Luke 16:16.

6. For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him. Matt. 21:32.

7. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Acts 1:5.

 
XII. Mary, Martha and Lazarus

1. Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: Luke 10:41.

2. But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. Luke 10:42.

3. Thy brother shall rise again. John 11:23.

4. I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. John 11:25.

5. And whosoever Iiveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? John 11:26.

6. Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? John 11:40.

7. Lazarus, come forth. John 11:43.

 
XIII. Samaritan Woman

1. Give me to drink. John 4:7.

2. If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. John 4:10.

3. But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. John 4:14.

4. Go, call thy husband, and come hither. John 4:16.

5. For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. John 4:18.

6. Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 4:21-24.

7. I that speak unto thee am he. John 4:26.

 
XIV. Nicodemus

1. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. John 3:3.

2. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. John 3:5.

3. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:6.

4. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. John 3:7.

5. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. John 3:8.

6. Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? John 3:10.

7. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? John 3:11-12.

 
XV. Mary, Mother of Jesus; Zacchaeus; Woman Taken in Adultery

MARY, MOTHER OF JESUS

1. How is it that ye sought me'.' wist ye not ,that 1 must be about my Father's business? Luke 2:49.

2. Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. John 2:4.

3. Woman, behold thy son. John 19:26. ZACCHAEUS

4. Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house. Luke 19:5.

5. This day is salvation come to this house, for so much as he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19:9-10.

WOMAN TAKEN IN ADULTERY

6. Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? John 8:10.

7. Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. John 8:11.

 
XVI. Simon and the Woman Who Was a Sinner

SIMON

1. Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. Luke 7:40.

2. There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? Luke 7:41-42.

3. Thou hast rightly judged. Luke 7:43.

4. Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gayest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. Thou gayest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. Luke 7:44-46.

5. Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is for-given, the same loveth little. Luke 7:47.

THE WOMAN WHO WAS A SINNER

6. Thy sins are forgiven. Luke 7:48.

XVII. Rich Young Ruler; Man Who Wanted Inheritance; Hypocritical Ruler of Synagogue; Thief on Cross

RICH YOUNG RULER

1. Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. Mark 10:18.

2. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. Mark 10:19.

3. One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. Mark 10:21.

MAN WHO WANTED INHERITANCE

4. Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? Luke 12:14.

HYPOCRITICAL RULER OF SYNAGOGUE

5. Thou hypocrite, does not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? Luke 13:15.

6. And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? Luke 13:16.

THIEF ON THE CROSS

7. Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou he with me in paradise. Luke 23:43.

 
XVIII. Pilate; High Priest, and Officer

PILATE

1. Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? John 18:34.

2. My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. John 18:36.

3. Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth heareth my voice. John 18:37.

THE HIGH PRIEST AND HIS OFFICER

4. Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. John 19:11.

5. Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Matt. 26:64.

6. I spake openly to the world: I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. Why asketh thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said. John 18:20, 21.

7. If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil, but if well, why smitest thou me? John 18:23.

 
XIX. Mary Magdalene and Cleopas and Disciple

MARY MAGDALENE

1. All hail. Matt. 28:9.

2. Be not afraid, go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. Matt. 28:10.

3. Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? John 20:15.

4. Mary. John 20:16.

5. Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. John 20:17.

CLEOPAS AND DISCIPLE

6. What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? What things? Luke 24:17-19.

7. 0 fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? Luke 24:25-26.

 
XX. After Ascension to Paul and John

PAUL

1. Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? Acts 9:4.

2. I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. Acts 9:5.

3. Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. Acts 9:6.

JOHN THE REVELATOR

4. I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna,

and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. Rev. 1:11.

5. Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, 1 am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Rev. 1:17, 18.

6. Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter; The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest arc the seven churches. Rev. 1:19-20.

7. I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. Rev. 22:16.

 
XXI. To Satan and Devils

TO SATAN

1. It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Matt. 4:4.

2. It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Matt. 4:7.

3. Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Matt. 4:10.

4. Hold thy peace, and come out of him. Mark 1:25.
