235. Prophetic Discourses: The Destruction of the Temple
(Mt 24:1-2, Mk 13:1-2, Lk 21:5-6)
Tuesday.
Mt 24:1-2

1Jesus went out from the temple, and was going on his way. His disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple. 2But he answered them, “Don’t you see all of these things? Most certainly I tell you, there will not be left here one stone on another, that will not be thrown down.”

Mk 13:1-2

1As he went out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, see what kind of stones and what kind of buildings!”

2Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone on another, which will not be thrown down.”

Lk 21:5-6

5As some were talking about the temple and how it was decorated with beautiful stones and gifts, he said, 6“As for these things which you see, the days will come, in which there will not be left here one stone on another that will not be thrown down.”

236. Prophetic Discourses: The Second Coming. At the Mount of Olives.
Mt 24:3-14:, Mk 13:3-13, Lk 21:7-19)
Tuesday.
i. "I am Christ
Mt 24:3-5

3As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age?”

4Jesus answered them, “Be careful that no one leads you astray. 5For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will lead many astray.

Mk 13:3-6

3As he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4“Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign that these things are all about to be fulfilled?”

5Jesus, answering, began to tell them, “Be careful that no one leads you astray. 6For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he![1]’ and will lead many astray.

1]13:6 or, “I AM!”

Lk 21:7-8

7They asked him, “Teacher, so when will these things be? What is the sign that these things are about to happen?”

8He said, “Watch out that you don’t get led astray, for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he[1],’ and, ‘The time is at hand.’ Therefore don’t follow them.

[1]21:8 or, I AM

ii. "Wars and Rumors of Wars"
Mt 24:6-8

6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you aren’t troubled, for all this must happen, but the end is not yet. 7For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be famines, plagues, and earthquakes in various places. 8But all these things are the beginning of birth pains.

Mk 13:7-8

7“When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, don’t be troubled. For those must happen, but the end is not yet. 8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places. There will be famines and troubles. These things are the beginning of birth pains.

Lk 21:9-11

9When you hear of wars and disturbances, don’t be terrified, for these things must happen first, but the end won’t come immediately.”

10Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11There will be great earthquakes, famines, and plagues in various places. There will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

iii. "Ye Shall be Hated of all Men!"
Mt 24:9-12

9Then they will deliver you up to oppression, and will kill you. You will be hated by all of the nations for my name’s sake. 10Then many will stumble, and will deliver up one another, and will hate one another. 11Many false prophets will arise, and will lead many astray. 12Because iniquity will be multiplied, the love of many will grow cold.

Mk 13:9-13a

9But watch yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils. You will be beaten in synagogues. You will stand before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them. 10The Good News must first be preached to all the nations. 11When they lead you away and deliver you up, don’t be anxious beforehand, or premeditate what you will say, but say whatever will be given you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.

12“Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child. Children will rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death. 13You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake, but he who endures to the end, the same will be saved.

Lk 21:12-19

12But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, delivering you up to synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for my name’s sake. 13It will turn out as a testimony for you. 14Settle it therefore in your hearts not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to withstand or to contradict. 16You will be handed over even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. They will cause some of you to be put to death. 17You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake. 18And not a hair of your head will perish.

19“By your endurance you will win your lives.

iv. "He that Shall Endure unto the End."
Mt 24:13-14

13But he who endures to the end, the same will be saved. 14This Good News of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world for a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.

Mk 13:13b

13You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake, but he who endures to the end, the same will be saved.

237. Prophetic Discourses: Signs Prelusive of Jerusalem’s Destruction
(Mt 24:15-22, Mk 13:14-20, Lk 21:20-24)
Tuesday.
Mt 24:15-22

15“When, therefore, you see the abomination of desolation,[1] which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), 16then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take out things that are in his house. 18Let him who is in the field not return back to get his clothes. 19But woe to those who are with child and to nursing mothers in those days! 20Pray that your flight will not be in the winter, nor on a Sabbath, 21for then there will be great oppression, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, nor ever will be. 22Unless those days had been shortened, no flesh would have been saved. But for the sake of the chosen ones, those days will be shortened.

[1]24:15 Daniel 9:27; 11:31; 12:11

Mk 13:14-20

14But when you see the abomination of desolation,[1] spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, 15and let him who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter in, to take anything out of his house. 16Let him who is in the field not return back to take his cloak. 17But woe to those who are with child and to those who nurse babies in those days! 18Pray that your flight won’t be in the winter. 19For in those days there will be oppression, such as there has not been the like from the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will be. 20Unless the Lord had shortened the days, no flesh would have been saved; but for the sake of the chosen ones, whom he picked out, he shortened the days.

[1]13:14 Daniel 9:17; 11:31; 12:11

Lk 21:20-24

20“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is at hand. 21Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let those who are in the midst of her depart. Let those who are in the country not enter therein. 22For these are days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. 23Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who nurse infants in those days! For there will be great distress in the land, and wrath to this people. 24They will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

238. Prophetic Discourses: False Christs. Signs of the Second Coming
(Mt 24:23-31, Mk 13:21-27, Lk 21:25-28)
Tuesday.
i. "Lo, Here is Christ!"
Mt 24:23-28

23“Then if any man tells you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or, ‘There,’ don’t believe it. 24For there will arise false christs, and false prophets, and they will show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the chosen ones.

25“Behold, I have told you beforehand. 26If therefore they tell you, ‘Behold, he is in the wilderness,’ don’t go out; ‘Behold, he is in the inner chambers,’ don’t believe it. 27For as the lightning flashes from the east, and is seen even to the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28For wherever the carcass is, there is where the vultures[1] gather together.  a

[1]24:28 or, eagles

Mk 13:21-23

21Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘Look, there!’ don’t believe it. 22For there will arise false christs and false prophets, and will show signs and wonders, that they may lead astray, if possible, even the chosen ones. 23But you watch.

“Behold, I have told you all things beforehand.

ii. Signs in the Sun, Moon, and Stars
Mt 24:29

29But immediately after the oppression of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken;[1]

[1]24:29 Isaiah 13:10; 34:4

Mk 13:24-25

24But in those days, after that oppression, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, 25the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken.[1]

[1]13:25 Isaiah 13:10; 34:4

Lk 21:25-26

25There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars; and on the earth anxiety of nations, in perplexity for the roaring of the sea and the waves; 26men fainting for fear, and for expectation of the things which are coming on the world: for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

iii. The Coming oh the Son of Man
Mt 24:30-31

30and then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky. Then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. 31He will send out his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.

Mk 13:26-27

26Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27Then he will send out his angels, and will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the sky.

Lk 21:27-28

27Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28But when these things begin to happen, look up, and lift up your heads, because your redemption is near.”

239. The Parable of the Fig Tree. Watchfulness Urged.
(Mt 24:32-42, Mk 13:28-33, Lk 21:29-33)
Tuesday.
i. The Parable
Mt 24:32-35

32“Now from the fig tree learn this parable. When its branch has now become tender, and puts forth its leaves, you know that the summer is near. 33Even so you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. 34Most certainly I tell you, this generation[1] will not pass away, until all these things are accomplished. 35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

[1]24:34 The word for “generation” (genea) can also be translated as “race.”

Mk 13:28-31

28“Now from the fig tree, learn this parable. When the branch has now become tender, and puts forth its leaves, you know that the summer is near; 29even so you also, when you see these things coming to pass, know that it is near, at the doors. 30Most certainly I say to you, this generation[1] will not pass away until all these things happen. 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

[1]13:30 The word translated “generation” (genea) could also be translated “race,” “family,” or “people.”

Lk 2:29-33

29He told them a parable. “See the fig tree, and all the trees. 30When they are already budding, you see it and know by your own selves that the summer is already near. 31Even so you also, when you see these things happening, know that the Kingdom of God is near. 32Most certainly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things are accomplished. 33Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will by no means pass away.

ii. "Of that Day and Hour Knoweth no Man"
Mt 24:36

36But no one knows of that day and hour, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

Mk 13:32

32But of that day or that hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

iii. "As the Days of Noah" b
Mt 24:37-39

37“As the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ship, 39and they didn’t know until the flood came, and took them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

iv. "One Shall be Taken, the Other Left" c
Mt 24:40-41

40Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and one will be left; 41two women grinding at the mill, one will be taken and one will be left.

v. "Watch Therefore"
Mt 24:42

42Watch therefore, for you don’t know in what hour your Lord comes.

Mk 13:33

33Watch, keep alert, and pray; for you don’t know when the time is.

240. Readiness Urged. Parables d
(Mt 24:, Mk 13:, Lk 21:)
Tuesday.

i. (Luke)
Warning Against Surfeiting and Drunkenness
Lk 21:34-36

34“So be careful, or your hearts will be loaded down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day will come on you suddenly. 35For it will come like a snare on all those who dwell on the surface of all the earth. 36Therefore be watchful all the time, praying that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

ii. (Mark)
Parable of the Porter
Mk 13:34-37

34“It is like a man, traveling to another country, having left his house, and given authority to his servants, and to each one his work, and also commanded the doorkeeper to keep watch. 35Watch therefore, for you don’t know when the lord of the house is coming, whether at evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning; 36lest coming suddenly he might find you sleeping. 37What I tell you, I tell all: Watch.”

iii. (Matthew)
Parables of the Master of the House and of the Two Servants
Mt 24:43-51

43But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. 44Therefore also be ready, for in an hour that you don’t expect, the Son of Man will come. e

45“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his lord has set over his household, to give them their food in due season? 46Blessed is that servant whom his lord finds doing so when he comes. 47Most certainly I tell you that he will set him over all that he has. 48But if that evil servant should say in his heart, ‘My lord is delaying his coming,’ 49and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with the drunkards, 50the lord of that servant will come in a day when he doesn’t expect it, and in an hour when he doesn’t know it, 51and will cut him in pieces, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites. There is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be. f

241. The Parable of the Ten Virgins
(Mt 25:1-13)
Tuesday.
Mt 25:1-13

1“Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3Those who were foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them, 4but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5Now while the bridegroom delayed, they all slumbered and slept. 6But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Behold! The bridegroom is coming! Come out to meet him!’ 7Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.[1] 8The foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us  some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9But the wise answered, saying, ‘What if there isn’t enough for us and you? You go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ 10While they went away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11Afterward the other virgins also came, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us.’ 12But he answered, ‘Most certainly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ 13Watch therefore, for you don’t know the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.

[1]25:7 The end of the wick of an oil lamp needs to be cut off periodically to avoid having it become clogged with carbon deposits. The wick height is also adjusted so that the flame burns evenly and gives good light without producing a lot of smoke.

242. The Parable of the Talents
(Mt 25:14-30)
Tuesday. g
Mt 25:14-30

14“For it is like a man, going into another country, who called his own servants, and entrusted his goods to them. 15To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one; to each according to his own ability. Then he went on his journey. 16Immediately he who received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 17In like manner he also who got the two gained another two. 18But he who received the one went away and dug in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.

19“Now after a long time the lord of those servants came, and reconciled accounts with them. 20He who received the five talents came and brought another five talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents. Behold, I have gained another five talents besides them.’

21“His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

22“He also who got the two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents. Behold, I have gained another two talents besides them.’

23“His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

24“He also who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you that you are a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter. 25I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the earth. Behold, you have what is yours.’

26“But his lord answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant. You knew that I reap where I didn’t sow, and gather where I didn’t scatter. 27You ought therefore to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received back my own with interest. 28Take away therefore the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29For to everyone who has will be given, and he will have abundance, but from him who doesn’t have, even that which he has will be taken away. 30Throw out the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ h

243. The Picture of the Day of Judgment
(Mt 25:31-46)
Tuesday.
Mt 25:31-46

31“But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32Before him all the nations will be gathered, and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34Then the King will tell those on his right hand, ‘Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35for I was hungry, and you gave me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in; 36naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me.’

37“Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, and feed you; or thirsty, and give you a drink? 38When did we see you as a stranger, and take you in; or naked, and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?’

40“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers[1], you did it to me.’ 41Then he will say also to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels; 42for I was hungry, and you didn’t give me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; 43I was a stranger, and you didn’t take me in; naked, and you didn’t clothe me; sick, and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’

44“Then they will also answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn’t help you?’

45“Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Most certainly I tell you, inasmuch as you didn’t do it to one of the least of these, you didn’t do it to me.’ 46These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

[1]25:40 The word for “brothers” here may be also correctly translated “brothers and sisters” or “siblings.”

i. The Prediction j
Mt 26:1-2

1It happened, when Jesus had finished all these words, that he said to his disciples, 2“You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”

ii. The Rulers Plot the Death of Jesus
Mt 26:3-5

3Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas. 4They took counsel together that they might take Jesus by deceit, and kill him. 5But they said, “Not during the feast, lest a riot occur among the people.” l

Mk 14:1-2

1It was now two days before the feast of the Passover and the unleavened bread, and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might seize him by deception, and kill him. 2For they said, “Not during the feast, because there might be a riot of the people.” l

Lk 22:1-2

1Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called the Passover, drew near. 2The chief priests and the scribes sought how they might put him to death, for they feared the people. k l

246. Judas Bargains for the Betrayal of Jesus
(Mt 24:14-16, Mk 14:10-11, Lk 22:3-6)
Tuesday.
Mt 26:14-16

14Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests, 15and said, “What are you willing to give me, that I should deliver him to you?” They weighed out for him thirty pieces of silver. 16From that time he sought opportunity to betray him.

Mk 14:10-11

10Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went away to the chief priests, that he might deliver him to them. 11They, when they heard it, were glad, and promised to give him money. He sought how he might conveniently deliver him.

Lk 22:3-6

3Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered with the twelve. 4He went away, and talked with the chief priests and captains about how he might deliver him to them. 5They were glad, and agreed to give him money. 6He consented, and sought an opportunity to deliver him to them in the absence of the multitude.
