He lived on his father's farm helping his older brothers. At twenty yea rs of age he went to Wisconsin to work in the lumber forests. Being indus trious and having a knowledge of tools, he progressed from the more meni al jobs to those of more responsibility, though it was hard and demandi ng work. This proved to be a good experience for him for when he return ed to the farm, he found he could work with his brothers much bette r. He and his wife started hosekeeping at the home place so Christina wou ld not be alone. After Christina's death, the farm land was split among t he children and Lyman constructed buildings on his portion. After lyman re ceived exciting letter from his brother Albert he was struck with the sa me fever (gold). He turned his farm over to a friend for a year and join ed Albert. He soon sent for his family. They spent the summer camping a nd the winter in rented rooms in Portland.
