MRS. MARY A. BETTS HAS PASSED AWAY

One of Johnstown's Oldest Residents Expired This Morning at Home

Mrs. Mary A. Launtz Betts, widsow of John R. Betts, is dead, having pass ed away at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, City Weighmaster and M rs William H. Happe, 87 Dibert street, Sixth Ward, in her 80th year. M rs Betts had been ill for some weeks of a complication of diseases, whi ch caused her death. The funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Satur day afternoon at the Happe residence by the Rev. Robert D. Clare, minist er of the First Lutheran Church. Burial will be made in the Betts pl ot in Grandview Cemetery.

Mary A. Launtz was a daughter of Felix and Rose Woy Launtz and was bo rn at Jenner Cross Roads, Somerset County, on September 14, 1838. She w as one of a family of nine children, two of whom, Richard and Austin Launt z, served in the Civil War. Miss Mary Launtz and John R. Betts were marri ed at Jenner Cross Roads 60 years ago by the Rev. Mr. Miller of the Hoffm an Lutheran Church. Two daughters were born to them, Marion Betts, havi ng been accidentally shot near Jenner Cross Roads some time before the Civ il War. The other daughter is Minerva, wife of William H. Happe. Mr. a nd Mrs. Launtz came to Johnstown soon after the Civil War and resided on L ocust street until 1872 when they removed to the South Side. John R. Bet ts's death occurred on March 8, 1906. He served in Battery D, Fifth Penns ylvania Heavy Artillery, during the Civil War. His captain was Webst er B. Lowman.

Besides her daughter, Mrs. Betts is survived by two grandsons, John B. a nd Frank William Happe, at home; a granddaughter, Marion, wife of Bert Bec ker of Ferndale Borough; a great grandson John William Becker, aged fo ur years; a sister, Mrs Jane Launtz Hopkins, aged 75 years, and a broth er George Launtz of the South Side, aged 69 years. Mrs Betts joined t he Hoffman Lutheran Church in Somerset County in 1855, transferring her me mbership to the Johnstown Church 50 years ago.

The funeral of the late Mrs. John R. Betts took placae Saturday afterno on from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Happe, of Dibert street, and w as largely attended. The services were in charge of the Rev. Rovert D. Cl are. The following relatives were here from outof the city: Mr. and Mr s. A. Harvey McFerren and Miss Rose Reynolds of Pittsburg: Mr. and Mrs. W illiam Pringle of Greensburg; MRs. G. W. Barclay of Scottdale; Mr. and Mr s. john C. Bentley and Mrs. Wesley Miller of Boswell; Harry Kautz of Jenn er Cross Roads, and Alexander Launtz and Miss Ella Launtz of Somerset.
