A PHOTOGRAPHIC STORY OF THE 1889 JOHNSTOWN FLOOD

By Harold H. Strayer and Irving L. London

One of the many commissaries was established at Bed ford and Baumer Street. Food and clothing—arriving by the B&O Railroad—was given to the survivors who had no other source of supply. This station was manned and sponsored by the local Masonic lodges.

In the center of the city relief was supervised by the Militia. Here a survivor signs up to receive rations.

Immediately after the waters receded, many people came from near and far to view the disaster.
