About the Author
STEELE,
DANIEL: Methodist Episcopalian; b. at Windham, N. Y., Oct. 5, 1824. He
was educated at Wesleyan University (A.B., 1848), where he was a tutor
from 1848 to 1850. He then held pastorates of his denomination in
various cities in Massachusetts until 1362, when he was appointed
professor in Genesee College, Lima, N. Y., a position which he occupied
until 1871. In 1872 he was elected first president of Syracuse
University, while from 1884 to 1893, when he retired from active life,
he was professor in the School of Theology of Boston University.
