First Epistle of Peter the Theologian

 

CHAPTER 3
  1  ομοιως   αι   γυναικες   υποτασσομεναι   τοις   ιδιοις   ανδρασιν   ινα   και   ει
    Likewise,   ♦   wives,   being subject   to your own   ♦   husbands,   that,   even   if
  τινες   απειθουσιν   τω   λογω   δια   της   των   γυναικων   αναστροφης   ανευ  
  any   are disobedient   to the   word,   by   the   of 2 the 3   wives 4   conduct 1   without  
λογου   κερδηθησωνται    
[the] word   they may be gained,    
  2  εποπτευσαντες   την   εν   φοβω   αγνην   αναστροφην   υμων    
    having witnessed [carried 4 out] 5   ♦   in 6   fear 7   chaste 2   conduct 3   your; 1    
  3  ων   εστω   ουχ   ο   εξωθεν   εμπλοκης   τριχων   και  
    whose   let 2 it 3 not 4 be 5   ♦   the 6   outward 7 [one] 8   of 9 braiding 10   of 11 hair, 12   and 13  
περιθεσεως   χρυσιων   η   ενδυσεως   ιματιων   κοσμος    
putting 14 around 15   of 16 gold, 17   or 18   putting 19 on 20   of 21 garments 22   adorning; 1    
  4  αλλ   ο   κρυπτος   της   καρδιας   ανθρωπος   εν   τω   αφθαρτω   του  
    but   the   hidden   of 2 the 3   heart 4   man, 1   in   the   incorruptible [ornament]   of the  
πραεος   και   ησυχιου   πνευματος   ο   εστιν   ενωπιον   του   θεου   πολυτελες    
meek   and   quiet   spirit,   which   is   before   ♦   God   of great price.    
  5  ουτως   γαρ   ποτε   και   αι   αγιαι   γυναικες   αι   ελπιζουσαι   επι   τον   θεον  
    For thus   ♦   formerly   also   the   holy   women   those   hoping   in   ♦   God  
εκοσμουν   εαυτας   υποτασσομεναι   τοις   ιδιοις   ανδρασιν    
adorned   themselves,   being subject   to their own   ♦   husbands;    
  6  ως   σαρρα   υπηκουσεν   τω   αβρααμ   κυριον   αυτον   καλουσα   ης  
    as   Sarah   obeyed   ♦   Abraham,   lord 3   him 2   calling; 1   of whom  
εγενηθητε   τεκνα   αγαθοποιουσαι   και   μη   φοβουμεναι   μηδεμιαν  
ye became   children,   doing good   and   not fearing   ♦   [with] any (lit. no)  
πτοησιν    
consternation.    
  7  οι   ανδρες   ομοιως   συνοικουντες   κατα   γνωσιν   ως   ασθενεστερω
    ♦   Husbands   likewise,   dwelling with [them]   according to   knowledge,   as   with a weaker [even]
  σκευει   τω   γυναικειω   απονεμοντες   τιμην   ως   και   συγκληρονομοι  
  vessel 4   with 1 the 2   female, 3   rendering [them]   honour,   as   also   [being] joint-heirs  
χαριτος   ζωης   εις   το   μη   εκκοπτεσθαι   τας   προσευχας   υμων    
of [the] grace   of life,   so as   ♦   not 3   to 4 be 5 cut 6 off 7   your 1 prayers. 2   ♦   ♦    
  8  το   δε   τελος   παντες   ομοφρονες   συμπαθεις   φιλαδελφοι  
    Finally,   ♦   ♦   all [being]   of one mind,   sympathizing,   loving the brethren,  
ευσπλαγχνοι   φιλοφρονες    
tender hearted,   friendly,    
  9  μη   αποδιδοντες   κακον   αντι   κακου   η   λοιδοριαν   αντι   λοιδοριας  
    not   rendering   evil   for   evil,   or   railing   for   railing;  
τουναντιον   δε   ευλογουντες   ειδοτες   οτι   εις   τουτο   εκληθητε   ινα  
but on the contrary,   ♦   blessing.   knowing   that   to   this   ye were called,   that  
ευλογιαν   κληρονομησητε    
blessing   ye should inherit.    
  10  ο   γαρ   θελων   ζωην   αγαπαν   και   ιδειν   ημερας   αγαθας  
    For he that   ♦   wills   life 3   to 1 love, 2   and   to see   days 2   good, 1  
παυσατω   την   γλωσσαν   αυτου   απο   κακου   και   χειλη   αυτου   του
let him cause to cease   his tongue   ♦   ♦   from   evil,   and   lips 2   his 1   ♦
  μη   λαλησαι   δολον    
  not   to speak   guile.    
  11  εκκλινατω   απο   κακου   και   ποιησατω   αγαθον   ζητησατω   ειρηνην   και  
    Let him turn aside   from   evil,   and   let him do   good.   Let him seek   peace   and  
διωξατω   αυτην    
let him pursue   it:    
  12  οτι   οι   οφθαλμοι   κυριου   επι   δικαιους   και   ωτα   αυτου   εις
    because   the   eyes   of [the] Lord   [are] on   [the] righteous,   and   his ears   ♦   towards
  δεησιν   αυτων   προσωπον   δε   κυριου   επι   ποιουντας   κακα    
  their supplication.   ♦   But [the] face   ♦   of [the] Lord   [is] against   those doing   evil.    
  13  και   τις   ο   κακωσων   υμας   εαν   του   αγαθου   μιμηται  
    And   who [is]   he that   shall injure   you,   if   of 2 that 3 which 4 [is] 5   good 6   imitators 1  
γενησθε    
ye should be?    
  14  αλλ   ει   και   πασχοιτε   δια   δικαιοσυνην   μακαριοι   τον  
    But   if   also   ye should suffer   on account of   righteousness,   blessed [are ye];   but their fear  
δε   φοβον   αυτων   μη   φοβηθητε   μηδε   ταραχθητε    
♦   ♦   ♦   ye should not be afraid of,   ♦   neither   should ye be troubled;    
  15  κυριον   δε   τον   θεον   αγιασατε   εν   ταις   καρδιαις   υμων   ετοιμοι   δε  
    but Lord 3   ♦   the 2   God 4   sanctify 1   in   your hearts,   ♦   ♦   and ready   ♦  
αει   προς   απολογιαν   παντι   τω   αιτουντι   υμας   λογον   περι  
[be] always   for   a defence   to everyone   ♦   that asks   you   an account   concerning  
της   εν   υμιν   ελπιδος   μετα   πραυτητος   και   φοβου    
the   in 2   you 3   hope, 1   with   meekness   and   fear;    
  16  συνειδησιν   εχοντες   αγαθην   ινα   εν   ω   καταλαλωσιν   υμων   ως  
    a 2 conscience 4   having 1   good, 3   that   whereas   ♦   they may speak against   you   as  
κακοποιων   καταισχυνθωσιν   οι   επηρεαζοντες   υμων   την   αγαθην   εν  
evil doers,   they may be ashamed   who   calumniate   your   ♦   good   in 4  
χριστω   αναστροφην    
Christ 5   manner 1 of 2 life. 3    
  17  κρειττον   γαρ   αγαθοποιουντας   ει   θελει   το   θελημα   του  
    For [it is] better,   ♦   [for 8 you] 9 doing 10 good 11   if 1   wills 6 [it] 7   the 2   will 3   ♦  
θεου   πασχειν   η   κακοποιουντας    
of 4 God, 5   to suffer,   than   doing evil;    
  18  οτι   και   χριστος   απαξ   περι   αμαρτιων   επαθεν   δικαιος   υπερ  
    because   indeed 2   Christ 1   once   for   sins   suffered,   [the] just   for  
αδικων   ινα   ημας   προσαγαγη   τω   θεω   θανατωθεις   μεν   σαρκι  
[the] unjust,   that   us   he might bring   ♦   to God;   having been put to death   ♦   in flesh,  
ζωοποιηθεις   δε   τω   πνευματι    
but made alive   ♦   by the   Spirit,    
  19  εν   ω   και   τοις   εν   φυλακη   πνευμασιν   πορευθεις   εκηρυξεν    
    in   which   also   to the   in 2   prison 3   spirits 1   having gone   he preached,    
  20  απειθησασιν   ποτε   οτε   απαξ   εξεδεχετο   η   του   θεου   μακροθυμια  
    [who] disobeyed   sometime,   when   once   was waiting   the   ♦   of 2 God 3   longsuffering 1  
εν   ημεραις   νωε   κατασκευαζομενης   κιβωτου   εις   ην   ολιγαι   τουτ   εστιν
in   [the] days   of Noe,   [while was] being prepared   [the] ark,   into   which   few,   that is   eight
  οκτω   ψυχαι   διεσωθησαν   δι    
  souls,   were saved   through   water,    
  21  ο   και   ημας   αντιτυπον   νυν   σωζει   βαπτισμα   ου   σαρκος   αποθεσις
    which   also 2   us 5   figure 1   now 3   saves 4   [even] baptism,   not   of flesh   a putting away
  ρυπου   αλλα   συνειδησεως   αγαθης   επερωτημα   εις   θεον   δι  
  of [the] filth,   but   of 5 a 6 conscience 8   good 7   [the] 1 demand 2   towards 3   God, 4   by  
αναστασεως   ιησου   χριστου    
[the] resurrection   of Jesus   Christ,    
  22  ος   εστιν   εν   δεξια   του   θεου   πορευθεις   εις   ουρανον  
    who   is   at   [the] right hand   ♦   of God,   gone   into   heaven,  
υποταγεντων   αυτω   αγγελων   και   εξουσιων   και   δυναμεων    
having 6 been 7 subjected 8   to 9 him 10   angels 1   and 2   authorities 3   and 4   powers. 5
