we apprehend

to have been framed

worlds

Enoch

was translated

to see

death,

and

was not found,

his translation

♦

αυτου		μεμαρτυρηται		ευηρεστηκεναι		τω		θεω
♦		he has borne witness to		to have well pleased		♦		God.

πιστεως

αδυνατον

ευαρεστησαι

πιστευσαι

γαρ

But apart from

faith

[it is] impossible

to well please [him].

προσερχομενον

εστιν

he is,

and [that]

τοις		εκζητουσιν		αυτον		μισθαποδοτης		γινεται
for those who		seek out 2		him 1		a rewarder		he becomes.

he condemned

world,

Abraham

obeyed

to go out

into

the

place

which

επισταμενος

he was about

to receive

for

an inheritance,

and

went out,

not

knowing

where

ερχεται
he is going.

επαγγελιας

ως

αλλοτριαν

εν

By faith

he sojourned

in

the

land

of the

promise,

as [in]

a strange [country],

in

κατοικησας

ισαακ

ιακωβ

συγκληρονομων

tents

having dwelt

with

Isaac

and

Jacob,

the

joint-heirs

of the

επαγγελιας		της		αυτης

for he was waiting for

the

city, 1

of which

[the] artificer		and		constructor [is]		♦		God.

δυναμιν

καταβολην

σπερματος

ελαβεν

By faith

also

herself 2

Sarah 1

power

for

[the] conception

of seed

received,

και

παρα

καιρον

ηλικιας

ετεκεν

επει

πιστον

ηγησατο

τον

and

beyond

seasonable 1

gave birth;

since

faithful

she esteemed

him who

promised.

Wherefore

also

from

one

were born,

and that too

αστρα

ουρανου

πληθει

of [one] having become dead,

even as

the

stars

of the

heaven

in multitude,

and

ωσει

αμμος

παρα

το

χειλος

της

θαλασσης

αναριθμητος

as

sand 3

the 7

shore 8

of 9 the 10

sea 11

the 1

countless. 2

απεθανον

ουτοι

παντες

μη

λαβοντες

τας

επαγγελιας

In

faith

died 3

these 2

all, 1

not

having received

the

promises,

αλλα

πορρωθεν

αυτας

ιδοντες

και

πεισθεντες

και

but

from afar

them

having seen,

and

having been persuaded,

and

ασπασαμενοι

και

ομολογησαντες

οτι

ξενοι

και

παρεπιδημοι

εισιν

having embraced [them],

and

having confessed

that

strangers

and

sojourners

they are

	επι		της		γης
	on		the		earth.

οι

γαρ

τοιαυτα

λεγοντες

εμφανιζουσιν

οτι

πατριδα

For they who

such things

say,

make manifest

that [their]

own country

επιζητουσιν
they are seeking.

και

ει

μεν

εκεινης

εμνημονευον

αφ

ης

εξηλθον

And if

♦

indeed

from

whence

they came out,

ειχον		αν		καιρον		ανακαμψαι
they might have had		♦		opportunity		to have returned;

νυνι

δε

κρειττονος

ορεγονται

τουτ

εστιν

επουρανιου

but now

a better

they stretch forward to,

that is,

a heavenly;

wherefore

επαισχυνεται

ο

Isaac

seed;

νεκρων

reckoning

that

even

from among

[the] dead

worshipped

the

top

of his staff.

Joseph

dying,

concerning

going forth

of the

sons

of Israel

εμνημονευσεν

περι

οστεων

made mention,

and

concerning

his bones

By faith

Moses,

having been born,

was hid

his parents

they saw

for he had respect

Egypt,

having feared

indignation

of the

king;

passover

the

affusion

of the

blood,

lest

πρωτοτοκα

αυτων

the destroyer of

the

firstborn [ones]

might touch

them.

πιστει

διεβησαν

την

ερυθραν

θαλασσαν

ως

δια

ξηρας

By faith

they passed through

the

Red

Sea

as

through

dry [land];

ης

πειραν

λαβοντες

οι

αιγυπτιοι

κατεποθησαν

of which

having 3 made 4 trial 5

the 1

Egyptians 2

were swallowed up.

επεσεν

κυκλωθεντα

επτα

By faith

the

walls

of Jericho

fell,

having been encircled

for

seven

days.

By faith

Rahab

the

harlot

disobeyed,

do I say?

Samson

of the		prophets:

οι

δια

πιστεως

κατηγωνισαντο

βασιλειας

ειργασαντο

δικαιοσυνην

who

by

faith

overcame

kingdoms,

wrought

righteousness,

επετυχον		επαγγελιων		εφραξαν		στοματα		λεοντων
obtained		promises,		stopped		mouths		of lions,

εσβεσαν

δυναμιν

πυρος

εφυγον

στοματα

μαχαιρας

quenched

[the] power

of fire,

escaped

[the] mouths

of [the] sword,

ενεδυναμωθησαν

απο

ασθενειας

εγενηθησαν

ισχυροι

εν

πολεμω

acquired strength

out of

weakness,

became

mighty

in

war,

παρεμβολας		εκλιναν		αλλοτριων
[the] 2 armies 3		made 1 to 6 give 7 way 8		of 4 strangers. 5

ελαβον

γυναικες

εξ

αναστασεως

τους

νεκρους

αυτων

αλλοι

δε

Received 10

women 9

by

resurrection

their dead;

♦

♦

and others

♦

ετυμπανισθησαν

ου

προσδεξαμενοι

την

απολυτρωσιν

ινα

κρειττονος

were tortured,

not

having accepted

♦

redemption,

that

a better

αναστασεως		τυχωσιν
resurrection		they might obtain;

εμπαιγμων

και

μαστιγων

πειραν

ελαβον

ετι

δε

and others

♦

of 2 mockings 3

and 4

of 5 scourgings 6

trial 1

received,

yea, moreover,

♦

δεσμων		και		φυλακης
of bonds		and		of imprisonment.

ελιθασθησαν

επρισθησαν

επειρασθησαν

εν

φονω

μαχαιρας

They were stoned,

were sawn asunder,

were tempted,

by

slaughter

of [the] sword

απεθανον

περιηλθον

εν

μηλωταις

εν

αιγειοις

δερμασιν

υστερουμενοι

they died;

the wandered

in

sheep-skins,

in

goats’

skins,

being destitute,

θλιβομενοι		κακουχουμενοι
being oppressed,		being evil-treated,

πλανωμενοι

deserts

wandering

in mountains

in caves

holes

of the

earth.

ουτοι

παντες

μαρτυρηθεντες

δια

της

πιστεως

ουκ

And

these

all,

having been borne witness to

through

faith,

did not receive

εκομισαντο		την		επαγγελιαν
♦		the		promise,

του

θεου

περι

ημων

κρειττον

τι

προβλεψαμενου

ινα

μη

♦

God

for

us

better 2

something 1

having foreseen,

that

not

χωρις		ημων		τελειωθωσιν
apart from		us		they should be made perfect.
