Epistle to the Hebrews

CHAPTER 4

1

φοβηθωμεν

ουν

μηποτε

καταλειπομενης

επαγγελιας

εισελθειν

We should fear

therefore

lest perhaps

to enter

δοκη

τις

εξ

υμων

υστερηκεναι

into

his rest,

to come short.

		For indeed		♦		we have had glad tidings announced		♦		[to us] even as

ωφελησεν

λογος

της

ακοης

εκεινους

μη

also they;

but

not

did profit

συγκεκραμενος		τη		πιστει		τοις		ακουσασιν
having been mixed with		♦		faith		in those who		heard.

εισερχομεθα

γαρ

εις

την

καταπαυσιν

οι

πιστευσαντες

καθως

ειρηκεν

For we enter

♦

into

the

rest,

who

believed;

as

he has said,

ως

ωμοσα

εν

τη

οργη

μου

ει

εισελευσονται

εις

την

καταπαυσιν

So

I swore

in

my wrath,

♦

♦

If

they shall enter

into

my rest;

♦

μου

καιτοι

των

εργων

απο

καταβολης

κοσμου

γενηθεντων

♦

though verily

the

works

from

[the] foundation

of [the] world

were done.

ειρηκεν

γαρ

που

περι

της

εβδομης

ουτως

και

κατεπαυσεν

For he has said

somewhere

concerning

the

seventh [day]

thus,

And

rested 2

ο

θεος

εν

τη

ημερα

τη

εβδομη

απο

παντων

των

εργων

αυτου

on

the

day 2

♦

seventh 1

from

all

his works:

♦

εν

τουτω

παλιν

ει

εισελευσονται

εις

την

καταπαυσιν

μου

and

in

this

[place] again,

If

they shall enter

into

my rest.

ουν

απολειπεται

τινας

εισελθειν

εις

αυτην

και

οι

Since

therefore

it remains [for]

some

to enter

into

it,

and

those who

προτερον

ευαγγελισθεντες

ουκ

εισηλθον

δι

απειθειαν

formerly

heard glad tidings

did not enter in

on account of

disobedience,

παλιν

τινα

οριζει

ημεραν

σημερον

εν

δαβιδ

λεγων

μετα

again

a certain

To-day,

David

saying,

after

ειρηται

εαν

φωνης

so long

a time,

(according as

it has been said,)

To-day,

σκληρυνητε

καρδιας

ye will hear,

harden not

your hearts.

The

remains

a sabbatism

to the

people

of God.

εισελθων

εις

την

καταπαυσιν

αυτου

αυτος

For he that

entered

into

his rest,

♦

♦

also

he

κατεπαυσεν

απο

των

εργων

αυτου

ωσπερ

απο

των

ιδιων

ο

rested

from

his works,

♦

as

σπουδασωμεν

ουν

εισελθειν

εις

εκεινην

την

καταπαυσιν

ινα

μη

We should be diligent

therefore

to enter

into

that

♦

rest,

lest

♦

εν

τω

αυτω

τις

υποδειγματι

πεση

της

απειθειας

after 4

of disobedience.

ο

λογος

του

θεου

και

ενεργης

και

τομωτερος

υπερ

For living [is]

♦

the

word

♦

of God

and

efficient,

and

sharper

than

πασαν

μαχαιραν

διστομον

και

διικνουμενος

αχρι

μερισμου

ψυχης

τε

every

sword 2

two-edged, 1

even

penetrating

to

[the] division

both of soul

♦

και

πνευματος

αρμων

τε

και

μυελων

και

κριτικος

ενθυμησεων

και

and

spirit,

of 2 joints 3

both 1

and

marrows,

and

[is] a discerner

of [the] thoughts

and

εννοιων		καρδιας
intents		of [the] heart.

και

ουκ

εστιν

κτισις

αφανης

ενωπιον

αυτου

παντα

δε

And

there is not

♦

a created thing

unapparent

before

him;

but all things

♦

γυμνα

και

τετραχηλισμενα

τοις

οφθαλμοις

αυτου

προς

ον

ημιν

ο

[are] naked

and

laid bare

to the

eyes

of him,

with

whom

[is] our

♦

λογος
account.

εχοντες

ουν

αρχιερεα

μεγαν

διεληλυθοτα

τους

ουρανους

Having

therefore

a high 2 priest 3

great 1

[who] has passed through

the

heavens,

ιησουν

τον

υιον

του

θεου

κρατωμεν

της

ομολογιας

Jesus

the

Son

♦

of God,

we should hold fast

the

confession.

15

ου

γαρ

εχομεν

αρχιερεα

μη

δυναμενον

συμπαθησαι

ταις

For not

♦

have we

a high priest

not

able

to sympathise

with our infirmities,

ασθενειαις		ημων		πεπειραμενον		δε		κατα		παντα
♦		♦		but [who] has been tempted		♦		in		all things

καθ		ομοιοτητα		χωρις		αμαρτιας
according to [our] likeness,		♦		apart from		sin.

16

προσερχωμεθα

ουν

μετα

παρρησιας

τω

θρονω

της

χαριτος

ινα

We should come

therefore

with

boldness

to the

throne

♦

of grace,

that

λαβωμεν

ελεον

και

χαριν

ευρωμεν

εις

ευκαιρον

βοηθειαν

we may receive

mercy,

and

grace 3

may 1 find 2

for

opportune

help.
