Second Epistle to the Corinthians

CHAPTER 8

1

γνωριζομεν

δε

υμιν

αδελφοι

την

χαριν

του

θεου

την

δεδομενην

But we make known

♦

to you,

brethren,

the

grace

♦

of God

which

has been given

εν		ταις		εκκλησιαις		της		μακεδονιας
in		the		assemblies		♦		of Macedonia;

οτι

εν

πολλη

δοκιμη

θλιψεως

η

περισσεια

της

χαρας

αυτων

και

that

in

much

proof

of tribulation

the

abundance

of their joy

♦

♦

and

η

κατα

βαθους

πτωχεια

αυτων

επερισσευσεν

εις

τον

πλουτον

της

♦

♦

deep 2

poverty 3

their 1

abounded

to

the

riches

♦

απλοτητος		αυτων
of their liberality.		♦

οτι

κατα

δυναμιν

μαρτυρω

και

υπερ

δυναμιν

For

according to

[their] power,

I bear witness,

and

beyond

[their] power

αυθαιρετοι
[they were] willing of themselves,

μετα

πολλης

παρακλησεως

δεομενοι

ημων

την

χαριν

και

την

with

much

entreaty

beseeching

of us,

grace 6

and 7

the 8

κοινωνιαν

της

διακονιας

της

εις

τους

αγιους

fellowship 9

δεξασθαι		ημας

εδωκαν

And

not [only]

according as

we hoped,

but

themselves

they gave

first

to the

κυριω

ημιν

θεληματος

θεου

Lord,

and

to us

by [the]

will

of God.

παρακαλεσαι

ημας

ινα

καθως

προενηρξατο

ουτως

και

So that

exhorted 2

Titus,

that

according as

before began,

so

also

επιτελεση

εις

υμας

την

χαριν

ταυτην

he might complete

with

you

also

this grace.

αλλ

ωσπερ

εν

παντι

περισσευετε

πιστει

και

λογω

και

γνωσει

και

But

even as

in

every [way]

ye abound,

in faith,

and

word,

and

knowledge,

and

παση

σπουδη

και

τη

εξ

υμων

εν

ημιν

αγαπη

ινα

και

εν

ταυτη

τη

all

diligence,

and

in the

also

in

grace		ye should abound.

επιταγην

λεγω

αλλα

σπουδης

a command

do I speak,

but

through

γινωσκετε

γαρ

χαριν

του

κυριου

ημων

ιησου

χριστου

For ye know

grace

Jesus

Christ,

that

επτωχευσεν

πλουσιος

ων

ινα

υμεις

by his poverty

διδωμι

συμφερει

οιτινες

ου

And

a judgment

in

this

I give,

for this

♦

for you

is profitable,

who

not

μονον

το

ποιησαι

αλλα

και

το

θελειν

προενηρξασθε

απο

περυσι

only

the

doing,

but

also

the

being willing

began before

a year ago.

♦

νυνι

δε

και

το

ποιησαι

επιτελεσατε

οπως

καθαπερ

η

But now

♦

also

complete; 1

so that

even as

[there was] the

προθυμια

θελειν

ουτως

και

το

επιτελεσαι

εκ

του

εχειν

readiness

of the

being willing,

so

also

the

completing

out of

that

ye [have].

γαρ

προθυμια

προκειται

εαν

εχη

τις

For if

the

readiness

is present,

according as

♦

may 2 have 3

anyone 1

ευπροσδεκτος		ου		καθο		ουκ		εχει
[he is] acceptable,		not		according as		he has not.		♦

ανεσις

θλιψις

αλλ

εξ

For [it is] not

♦

that

to others [there may be]

ease,

but for you

♦

pressure,

but

of

ισοτητος

εν

τω

νυν

καιρω

το

υμων

περισσευμα

εις

το

equality,

in

to

present

time

♦

your

abundance

for

their deficiency,

εκεινων		υστερημα
♦		♦

ινα

και

το

εκεινων

περισσευμα

γενηται

εις

υμων

that

also

♦

their

abundance

may be

for

your deficiency,

♦

υστερημα		οπως		γενηται		ισοτης
♦		so that		there should be		equality.

καθως

γεγραπται

ο

το

πολυ

ουκ

επλεονασεν

και

According as

it has been written,

He that [gathered]

♦

much

had over, 1

and

ο		το		ολιγον		ουκ		ηλαττονησεν
he that [gathered]		♦		little		did not lack.		♦

χαρις

δε

τω

θεω

τω

διδοντι

την

αυτην

σπουδην

υπερ

υμων

εν

τη

But thanks

to God,

who

gives

the

same

diligence

for

you

in

the

καρδια		τιτου
heart		of Titus.

την

μεν

παρακλησιν

εδεξατο

σπουδαιοτερος

δε

υπαρχων

For

the

indeed 2

exhortation 1

he received,

but more diligent

♦

being,

αυθαιρετος		εξηλθεν		προς		υμας
of his own accord		he went out		to		you.

συνεπεμψαμεν

δε

μετ

αυτου

τον

αδελφον

ου

ο

επαινος

εν

τω

But we sent

♦

with

him

the

brother

of whom

the

praise

[is] in

the

ευαγγελιω		δια		πασων		των		εκκλησιων
glad tidings		through		all		of the		assemblies;

ου

μονον

δε

αλλα

και

χειροτονηθεις

υπο

των

εκκλησιων

and not only [so],

♦

♦

but

also

having been chosen

by

the

assemblies

συνεκδημος

ημων

συν

τη

χαριτι

ταυτη

τη

διακονουμενη

[is] our fellow-traveller

♦

with

this grace,

♦

♦

which [is]

served

υφ

ημων

προς

την

αυτου

του

κυριου

δοξαν

και

προθυμιαν

by

us

to

the

himself 5

glory 1

and

[a witness of] readiness 2

στελλομενοι

τουτο

μη

τις

ημας

μωμησηται

εν

τη

αδροτητι

avoiding

this,

lest

anyone

us

should blame

in

this abundance

♦

	ταυτη		τη		διακονουμενη		υφ		ημων
	♦		which [is]		served		by		us;

προνοουμενοι

καλα

ου

μονον

ενωπιον

κυριου

αλλα

και

ενωπιον

providing

things right

not

only

before

[the] Lord,

but

also

before

ανθρωπων
men.

22

συνεπεμψαμεν

δε

αυτοις

τον

αδελφον

ημων

ον

εδοκιμασαμεν

And we sent with

them

our brother

♦

♦

whom

we proved

εν

πολλοις

πολλακις

σπουδαιον

οντα

νυνι

δε

πολυ

σπουδαιοτερον

in

many things

often

diligent

to be,

and now

♦

much

more diligent

πεποιθησει		πολλη		τη		εις		υμας
by the confidence 2		great 1		which [is]		towards		you.

εις

υμας

συνεργος

ειτε

Whether

as regards

Titus,

[he is] partner 2

for

you

a fellow-worker;

or

αδελφοι

δοξα

brethren 2

[they are] messengers

of assemblies,

glory 2

The

therefore 2

of your love,

of our

boasting

υμων

ενδειξασθε

about

you,

in

face

of the

assemblies.
