First Epistle to the Corinthians

CHAPTER 14
Pursue     love,   and be emulous of       spirituals,   but rather     that
ye may prophesy.
For he that     speaks   with a tongue,   not   to men   speaks,   but     to God:
for no one     hears;   in 2 spirit 3   but 1   he speaks   mysteries.
But he that     prophesies,   to men   speaks [for]   building up   and
encouragement   and   consolation.
He that   speaks   with a tongue,   himself   builds up;   But he that     prophesies,
[the] assembly   builds up.
Now I desire     all   you   to speak   with tongues,   rather 2   but 1   that
ye should prophesy:   greater 2   for 1   [is] he that   prophesies   than   he that   speaks
with tongues,     unless     he should interpret,   that   the   assembly   building up
may receive.
And now,     bretheren,   if   I come   to   you   with tongues   speaking,   what   you
shall I profit,   unless     to you   I shall speak   either   in   revelation,   or   in   knowledge,   or
in   prophecy,   or   in   teaching?
Even     lifeless things   a sound   giving,   whether   pipe   or   harp,   if
distinction   to the   sounds   they give not,     how   shall be known   that
being piped   or     being harped?
For also     if   an uncertain   sound   a trumpet   give,   who   shall prepare himself   for
war?
So   also   ye,   by means of   the   tongue   unless     an intelligible   speech   ye give,
how   shall be known   that   being spoken?   for ye will be     into 2   [the] 3 air 4
speaking. 1
So many     it may be,   kinds   of sounds   there are   in   [the] world,   and   none   of them
without [distinct] sound.
If   therefore   I know not     the   power   of them   sound,   I shall be   to him that
speaks   a barbarian;   and   he that   speaks,   for 3   me 4   a 1 barbarian. 2
So   also   ye,   since   emulous   ye are   of spirits,   for   the   building up
of the   assembly   seek   that   ye may abound.
Wherefore   he that   speaks   with a tongue,   let him pray   that   he may interpret.
For if     I pray   with a tongue,   my spirit       prays,
but my understanding         unfruitful   is.
What   then   is it?   I will pray   with the   Spirit,   I 2 will 3 pray 4   but 1   also
with the   understanding.   I will praise   with the   Spirit,   I 2 will 3 praise 4   but 1   also   with the
νοι
understanding.
Else   if   thou bless   with the   spirit,   he that   fills   the   place   of the
uninstructed   how   shall he say   the   Amen   at   thy giving of thanks,
since   what   thou sayest   he knows not?
For thou indeed       well   givest thanks,   but   the   other   is not built up.

    I thank     God 2   my, 1   than 7 all 8   of 9 you 10   more 6   with 4 tongues 5   speaking; 3
but   in   [the] assembly   I desire   five   words   with     understanding 2   my 1
to speak,   that   also   others   I may instruct,   than   ten thousand   words   in   a tongue.
Brethren,   not 2   children 3   be 1   in [your] minds,     but     in malice
be babes;   but in     [your] minds   full 2 grown 3   be. 1
In   the   law   it has been written,     By   other tongues,   and   by   lips 2
other 1   I will speak   to this people,       and   not even   thus   will they hear
me,   saith   [the] Lord.
So that   the   tongues   for   a sign   are,   not   to those that   believe,   but
to the   unbelievers;   but prophecy,       not   to the   unbelievers,   but   to those that
believe.
If   therefore   come 4 together 5   the 1   assembly 3   whole 2   in one place,       and
all   with tongues   should speak,   and come in     uninstructed ones   or   unbelievers,
will they not say     that   ye are mad?
But if     all   prophesy,   and should come in     some   unbeliever   or
uninstructed,   he is convicted   by   all,   he is examined   by   all;
and   thus   the   secrets   of his heart       manifest   become;   and
thus   falling   upon   [his] face,   he will do homage     to God,   declaring   that
God   indeed   amongst   you   is.
What   then   is it,   brethren?   when   ye may come together,   each   of you   a psalm
has,   a teaching   has,   a tongue   has,   a revelation   has,   an interpretation   has.
All things   for   building up   let be done.
If   with a tongue   anyone   speak,   [let it be] by   two   or   the   most   three,   and
in succession,     and   one 2   let interpret; 1
and if     there be not     an interpreter,   let him be silent   in   an assembly;   and to himself
let him speak   and     to God.
And prophets     two 2   or 3   three 4   let speak 1   and   the 2   others 3   let discern. 1
    But if     to another   should 3 be 4 a 5 revelation 6   sitting 1 by, 2   the 8   first 9   let be silent. 7
Ye 2 can 3   for 1   one by one     all   prophesy,   that   all
may learn,   and   all   may be exhorted.
And   spirits   of prophets   to prophets   are subject.
For not 3     he 1 is 2   of 6 disorder 7   the 4   God, 5   but   of peace,   as   in   all   the
  assemblies   of the   saints.
Women 2   your 1   in   the   assemblies   let them be silent,   for it is not allowed
to them   to speak;   but   to be in subjection,   according as   also   the   law
says.
But if     anything   to learn   they wish,   at home     their own     husbands
let them ask;   for a shame     it is   for women   in   assembly   to speak.
Or   from 3   you 4   the 5   word 6     of 7 God 8   went 1 out, 2   or   to   you   only
did it arrive?
If   anyone   thinks   a prophet   to be   or   spiritual,   let him recognize   the things
I write   to you,   that   of the   Lord   they are   commands.
But if     any   be ignorant,   let him be ignorant.
So that,   brethren,   be emulous     to prophesy,   and     to speak   with tongues
do not forbid.
All things   becomingly   and   with   order   let be done.
