First Epistle to the Corinthians

CHAPTER 11

1

μιμηται

μου

γινεσθε

καθως

καγω

χριστου

Imitators

of me

be,

according as

I also [am]

of Christ.

2

επαινω

δε

υμας

αδελφοι

οτι

παντα

μου

μεμνησθε

και

Now I praise

♦

you,

brethren,

that

in all things

me

ye have remembered;

and

καθως

παρεδωκα

υμιν

τας

παραδοσεις

κατεχετε

according as

I delivered

to you,

the

traditions

ye keep.

θελω

δε

υμας

ειδεναι

οτι

παντος

ανδρος

η

κεφαλη

ο

χριστος

But I wish

♦

you

to know,

that

of every

man

the 4

the 1

Christ 2

εστιν

κεφαλη

δε

γυναικος

ο

ανηρ

κεφαλη

δε

χριστου

ο

θεος

is, 3

but head

♦

of [the] woman [is]

the

man,

and head

♦

of Christ,

♦

God.

πας

ανηρ

προσευχομενος

η

προφητευων

κατα

κεφαλης

εχων

Every

man

praying

or

prophesying,

[anything] on

[his] head

having,

καταισχυνει		την		κεφαλην		αυτου
puts to shame		his head.		♦		♦

πασα

δε

γυνη

προσευχομενη

η

προφητευουσα

ακατακαλυπτω

But every

♦

woman

praying

or

prophesying

uncovered 4

τη

κεφαλη

καταισχυνει

την

κεφαλην

εαυτης

εν

γαρ

εστιν

with 1 the 2

head, 3

puts to shame

her head;

♦

for one

♦

it is

και		το		αυτο		τη		εξυρημενη
and		the		same		with having been shaven.		♦

γαρ

ου

κατακαλυπτεται

γυνη

και

κειρασθω

ει

For if

♦

be not covered

♦

a woman,

also

let her be shorn.

But if [it be]

δε

αισχρον

γυναικι

το

κειρασθαι

η

ξυρασθαι

κατακαλυπτεσθω

♦

shameful

to a woman

♦

to be shorn

or

to be shaven,

let her be covered.

ανηρ

μεν

γαρ

ουκ

οφειλει

κατακαλυπτεσθαι

την

κεφαλην

εικων

For man indeed

♦

♦

to have covered 3

the 1

head, 2

image

και

δοξα

θεου

υπαρχων

γυνη

δε

δοξα

ανδρος

εστιν

and

glory

of God

being;

but woman

♦

glory

of man

is.

ου

γαρ

εστιν

ανηρ

εκ

γυναικος

αλλα

γυνη

εξ

ανδρος

For not

♦

is

man

of

woman,

but

woman

of

man.

και

γαρ

ουκ

εκτισθη

ανηρ

δια

την

γυναικα

αλλα

γυνη

For also

♦

not

was created

man

on account of

the

woman,

but

woman

δια		τον		ανδρα
on account of		the		man.

δια

τουτο

οφειλει

η

γυνη

εξουσιαν

εχειν

επι

της

κεφαλης

Because of

this

ought

the

woman

authority

to have

on

the

head,

δια		τους		αγγελους
on account of		the		angels.

πλην

ουτε

ανηρ

χωρις

γυναικος

ουτε

γυνη

χωρις

ανδρος

εν

However

neither [is]

man

apart from

woman,

nor

woman

apart from

man,

in

κυριω
[the] Lord.

12

ωσπερ

γαρ

η

γυνη

εκ

του

ανδρος

ουτως

και

ο

ανηρ

δια

της

For as

♦

the

woman

of

the

man [is],

so

also

the

man

by

the

γυναικος

τα

δε

παντα

εκ

του

θεου

woman [is];

but all things

♦

♦

of

♦

God.

υμιν

αυτοις

κρινατε

πρεπον

εστιν

γυναικα

ακατακαλυπτον

τω

In

yourselves

♦

judge:

becoming

is it

for a woman

uncovered

♦

θεω		προσευχεσθαι
to God		to pray?

ουδε

αυτη

η

φυσις

διδασκει

υμας

οτι

ανηρ

μεν

εαν

κομα

Or

not 2 even 3

itself 5

nature 4

does teach 1

you,

that

if 1

have long hair

ατιμια		αυτω		εστιν
a dishonour		to him		it is?

have long hair;

glory

to her

it is;

for

the

long hair

instead

περιβολαιου		δεδοται		αυτη
of a covering		is given		to her.

δοκει

φιλονεικος

ειναι

ημεις

τοιαυτην

συνηθειαν

But if

anyone

thinks

contentious 3

εκκλησιαι

nor

the

assemblies

♦

of God.

τουτο

δε

παραγγελλων

ουκ

επαινω

οτι

ουκ

εις

το

But [as 3 to] 4 this 5

charging 1 [you] 2

I do not praise[you],

♦

that

not

for

the

κρειττον

αλλ

εις

το

ηττον

συνερχεσθε

better,

but

for

the

worse

ye come together.

συνερχομενων

εκκλησια

ακουω

coming together

the

assembly,

I hear

σχισματα

εν

υμιν

υπαρχειν

και

μερος

τι

πιστευω

divisions

among

you

to be,

and

partly

I believe [it].

γαρ

αιρεσεις

εν

υμιν

ειναι

ινα

οι

δοκιμοι

φανεροι

For there must

♦

also

sects

among

you

be,

that

the

approved

manifest

γενωνται		εν		υμιν
may become		among		you.

συνερχομενων

ουν

υμων

επι

το

αυτο

ουκ

εστιν

κυριακον

Coming together

therefore

ye

into one place,

♦

♦

[the] Lord’s

δειπνον		φαγειν
supper		to eat.

21

εκαστος

γαρ

το

ιδιον

δειπνον

προλαμβανει

εν

τω

φαγειν

και

ος

For each one

♦

his own

♦

supper

takes first

in

♦

eating,

and

one

μεν		πεινα		ος		δε		μεθυει
♦		is hungry		and another		♦		is drunken.

μη

γαρ

οικιας

ουκ

εχετε

εις

το

εσθιειν

και

πινειν

η

της

♦

For

houses

have ye not

♦

for

♦

eating

and

drinking?

or

the

εκκλησιας

του

θεου

καταφρονειτε

και

καταισχυνετε

τους

μη

assembly

♦

of God

do ye despise,

and

put to shame

them that

have not?

εχοντας

τι

υμιν

ειπω

επαινεσω

υμας

εν

τουτω

ουκ

♦

What

to you

should I say?

shall I praise

you

in

this?

I do not praise.

γαρ

παρελαβον

απο

του

κυριου

ο

και

παρεδωκα

υμιν

οτι

For I

♦

received

from

the

Lord

that which

also

I delivered

to you,

that

ο

κυριος

ιησους

εν

τη

νυκτι

η

παρεδιδοτο

ελαβεν

αρτον

the

Lord

Jesus

in

the

night

in which

he was delivered up

took

bread,

και

ευχαριστησας

εκλασεν

και

ειπεν

λαβετε

φαγετε

τουτο

μου

and

having given thanks

he broke [it],

and

said,

Take,

eat,

this

of me

εστιν

το

σωμα

το

υπερ

υμων

κλωμενον

τουτο

ποιειτε

εις

την

is

the

body

which

for

you

[is] being broken:

this

do

in

εμην		αναμνησιν
remembrance of me.		♦

ωσαυτως

και

το

ποτηριον

μετα

το

δειπνησαι

λεγων

τουτο

το

In like manner

also

the

cup,

after

♦

having supped,

saying,

This

♦

ποτηριον

η

καινη

διαθηκη

εστιν

εν

τω

εμω

αιματι

τουτο

ποιειτε

cup

the

new

covenant

is

in

my blood:

♦

♦

this

do,

οσακις

αν

πινητε

εις

την

εμην

αναμνησιν

as often as

♦

ye may drink [it],

in

remembrance of me.

♦

♦

οσακις

γαρ

αν

εσθιητε

τον

αρτον

τουτον

και

το

ποτηριον

For as often as

♦

♦

ye may eat

♦

this bread,

♦

and

this cup

♦

τουτο

πινητε

τον

θανατον

του

κυριου

καταγγελλετε

αχρις

ου

αν

♦

may drink,

the

death

of the

Lord

ye announce,

until

♦

♦

ελθη
he may come.

ωστε

ος

αν

εσθιη

τον

αρτον

τουτον

η

πινη

το

So that

whosoever

♦

should eat

this bread

♦

♦

or

should drink

the

ποτηριον

του

κυριου

αναξιως

ενοχος

εσται

του

σωματος

και

αιματος

cup

of the

Lord

unworthily,

guilty

shall be

of the

body

and

blood

του		κυριου
of the		Lord.

δοκιμαζετω

δε

ανθρωπος

εαυτον

και

ουτως

εκ

του

αρτου

εσθιετω

και

But let prove 3

♦

a 1 man 2

himself,

and

thus

of

the

bread

let him eat,

and

	εκ		του		ποτηριου		πινετω
	of		the		cup		let him drink.

ο

γαρ

εσθιων

και

πινων

αναξιως

κριμα

εαυτω

εσθιει

και

For he that

♦

eats

and

drinks

unworthily,

judgment

to himself

eats

and

πινει

μη

διακρινων

το

σωμα

του

κυριου

drinks,

not

discerning

the

body

of the

Lord.

30

δια

τουτο

εν

υμιν

πολλοι

ασθενεις

και

αρρωστοι

και

Because of

this

among

you

many

[are] weak

and

infirm,

and

κοιμωνται		ικανοι
are fallen asleep		many.

31

ει

γαρ

εαυτους

διεκρινομεν

ουκ

αν

εκρινομεθα

If

for

ourselves

we scrutinized,

we should not be judged.

♦

♦

32

κρινομενοι

δε

υπο

κυριου

παιδευομεθα

ινα

μη

συν

τω

κοσμω

Being 2 judged 3

but, 1

by

[the] Lord

we are disciplined,

that

not

with

the

world

κατακριθωμεν
we should be condemned.

33

ωστε

αδελφοι

μου

συνερχομενοι

εις

το

φαγειν

αλληλους

εκδεχεσθε

So that,

my brethren,

♦

coming together

for

♦

to eat,

one another

wait for.

34

ει

δε

τις

πεινα

εν

οικω

εσθιετω

ινα

μη

εις

κριμα

But if

♦

anyone

be hungry,

at home

♦

let him eat,

that

not

for

judgment

συνερχησθε

τα

δε

λοιπα

ως

αν

ελθω

διαταξομαι

ye may come together;

and the

♦

other things

whenever

♦

I may come,

I will set in order.
