But this

I say

by way of

permission,

not

by way of

command.

παντας

ανθρωπους

ειναι

ως

εμαυτον

αλλ

εκαστος

χαρισμα

εκ

θεου

μεν

gift

αγαμοις

ταις

χηραις

καλον

αυτοις

εστιν

εαν

But I say

to the

unmarried

and

to the

widows,

good

for them

it is

if

μεινωσιν		ως		καγω
they should remain		as		even I.

ει

δε

ουκ

εγκρατευονται

γαμησατωσαν

κρεισσον

γαρ

But if

♦

they have not self-control,

♦

let them marry;

for better

♦

	εστιν		γαμησαι		η		πυρουσθαι
	it is		to marry		than		to burn.

τοις

δε

γεγαμηκοσιν

παραγγελλω

ουκ

εγω

αλλ

ο

κυριος

γυναικα

But to the

married

I charge,

not

I,

but

the

Lord,

wife

απο		ανδρος		μη		χωρισθηναι
from		husband		not		to be separated;

χωρισθη

μενετω

αγαμος

τω

ανδρι

(but if

also

she be separated,

let her remain

unmarried,

or

to the

husband

καταλλαγητω

και

ανδρα

γυναικα

μη

αφιεναι

be reconciled;)

But to the

Lord,

to dwell

let him not leave

a woman

unbeliever

separates himself,

let him separate himself;

is not under bondage

such [cases],

peace

the

calling

in which

he was called,

this

let him abide.

δουλος

εκληθης

μη

σοι

μελετω

αλλ

ει

δυνασαι

Bondman [being]

wast thou called,

not

to thee

let it be a care;

but

and if

♦

thou art able

ελευθερος		γενεσθαι		μαλλον		χρησαι

For he

[being] a bondman,

a freedman

of [the] Lord

likewise

free

being called,

a bondman

of Christ.

ηγορασθητε

γινεσθε

δουλοι

ανθρωπων

With a price

ye were bought;

become not

bondmen

of men.

εκαστος

εν

ω

εκληθη

αδελφοι

εν

τουτω

μενετω

παρα

τω

θεω

Each

wherein

♦

he was called,

brethren,

in

that

let him abide

with

♦

God.

των

παρθενων

επιταγην

κυριου

ουκ

εχω

But concerning

virgins,

commandment

of [the] Lord

I have not;

♦

γνωμην

δε

διδωμι

ως

ηλεημενος

υπο

κυριου

πιστος

ειναι

but judgment

♦

I give,

as

having received mercy

from

[the] Lord

faithful 3

to 1 be. 2

I think

then

this

good 2

is 1

because of

the

present

necessity,

καλον

ανθρωπω

that

[it is] good

for a man

to be.

γυναικι

ζητει

λυσιν

λελυσαι

απο

Hast thou been bound

to a wife?

seek not

♦

to be loosed.

Hast thou been loosed

from

a wife?		seek not		♦		a wife.

ημαρτες

και

εαν

But if

also

thou mayest have married,

thou didst not sin;

♦

and

if

θλιψιν

σαρκι

But this

I say,

brethren,

the

season

straitened [is].

For the rest

is,

that

even

those

having

wives,

κλαιοντες

ως

μη

κλαιοντες

χαιροντες

μη

and

those

weeping,

as

not

weeping;

and

those

rejoicing,

as

not

χαιροντες

και

οι

αγοραζοντες

ως

μη

κατεχοντες

rejoicing;

and

those

buying,

as

not

possessing;

και

οι

χρωμενοι

τω

κοσμω

τουτω

ως

μη

καταχρωμενοι

and

those

using

this world,

♦

♦

as

not

using [it] as their own;

παραγει

γαρ

το

σχημα

του

κοσμου

τουτου

for passes away

♦

the

fashion

of this world.

♦

♦

32

θελω

δε

υμας

αμεριμνους

ειναι

ο

αγαμος

μεριμνα

τα

του

But I wish

♦

you

without care

to be.

The

unmarried

cares for

the things

of the

κυριου		πως		αρεσει		τω		κυριω
Lord,		how		he shall please		the		Lord;

33

ο

δε

γαμησας

μεριμνα

τα

του

κοσμου

πως

αρεσει

τη

but he that

♦

is married

cares for

the things

of the

world,

how

he shall please

the

γυναικι
wife.

34

μεμερισται

η

γυνη

και

η

παρθενος

η

αγαμος

μεριμνα

τα

του

Divided are

the

wife

and

the

virgin.

The

unmarried

cares for

the things

of the

κυριου

ινα

η

αγια

και

σωματι

και

πνευματι

η

δε

γαμησασα

Lord,

that

she may be

holy

both

in body

and

spirit;

but she that

♦

is married

μεριμνα

τα

του

κοσμου

πως

αρεσει

τω

ανδρι

cares for

the things

of the

world,

how

she shall please

the

husband.

35

τουτο

δε

προς

το

υμων

αυτων

συμφερον

λεγω

ουχ

ινα

βροχον

But this

♦

for

your own

♦

♦

profit

I say;

not

that

a noose

υμιν

επιβαλω

αλλα

προς

το

ευσχημον

και

ευπροσεδρον

τω

you 5

I 1 may 2 cast 3 before, 4

but

for

what

[is] seemly,

and

waiting

on the

κυριω		απερισπαστως
Lord		without distraction.

ασχημονειν

παρθενον

But if

anyone

[he] 2 behaves 3 unseemly 4

to 5

virginity 7

his 6

thinks, 1

if

υπερακμος

οφειλει

γινεσθαι

θελει

ποιειτω

he be

beyond [his] prime,

and

so

it ought

to be,

what

he wills

let him do,

ουχ		αμαρτανει		γαμειτωσαν
he does not sin:		♦		let them marry.

εστηκεν

εδραιος

εν

τη

καρδια

μη

εχων

αναγκην

εξουσιαν

But he who

♦

stands

firm

in

♦

heart,

not

having

necessity,

but authority

δε

εχει

περι

του

ιδιου

θεληματος

και

τουτο

κεκρικεν

εν

τη

καρδια

♦

has

over

his own

♦

will,

and

this

has judged

in

♦

his heart,

αυτου

του

τηρειν

την

εαυτου

παρθενον

καλως

ποιει

♦

♦

to keep

his own

♦

virginity,

well

he does.

ωστε

ο

εκγαμιζων

καλως

ποιει

ο

δε

μη

εκγαμιζων

So that

also

he that

gives in marriage

well 2

does; 1

and he that

gives in marriage 1

δεδεται

νομω

A wife

is bound

by law

for

as long as 2

time 1

her 3 husband; 4

δε

κοιμηθη

ο

ανηρ

αυτης

ελευθερα

εστιν

ω

but if

may have fallen asleep

the

husband

of her,

free

she is

to whom

θελει		γαμηθηναι		μονον		εν		κυριω
she wills		to be married,		only		in		[the] Lord.

40

μακαριωτερα

δε

εστιν

εαν

ουτως

μεινη

κατα

την

εμην

But happier

♦

she is

if

so

she should remain,

according to

♦

my

γνωμην

δοκω

δε

καγω

πνευμα

θεου

εχειν

judgment;

and I think

♦

I also
