Epistle to the Romans

CHAPTER 9
Truth   I say   in   Christ,   I lie not,     bearing witness with   me
my conscience       in [the]   Spirit 2   Holy, 1
that   grief 2   to 3 me 4   is 5   great, 1   and   unceasing   sorrow   in my heart,
μου

For I was wishing     myself 2   I 1   a curse   to be   from   the   Christ   for
my brethren,       my kinsmen       according to   flesh;
who   are   Israelites,   whose [is]   the   adoption   and   the   glory,   and   the
covenants   and   the   lawgiving,   and   the   service   and   the   promises;
whose [are]   the   fathers;   and   of   whom [is]   the   Christ     according to   flesh,   who
is   over   all   God   blessed   to   the   ages.   Amen.
Not   however     that   has failed   the   word     of God;   for not     all
which 4 [are] 5   of 6   Israel 7   those 1 [are] 2   Israel: 3
nor   because   they are   seed   of Abraham [are]   all   children:   but,   In   Issac
shall be called   to thee   a seed.
That is,   not 8   the 1   children 2   of 3 the 4   flesh 5   these 6 [are] 7   children     of God;   but
the   children   of the   promise   are reckoned   for   seed.
For of promise     this word [is],       According to   this time
I will come,   and   there shall be     to Sarah   a son.
And not only [that],       but   also   Rebecca   by 3   one 4   conception 2   having 1
Issac   our father,
not 4 yet 5 [the 2 children] 3   for 1   being born,   nor   having done   anything   good
or   evil,   (that   the   according 4 to 5   election 6     of 2 God 3   purpose 1   might abide,   not
of   works,   but   of   him who   calls),
it was said   to her,     The   greater   shall serve   the   lesser:
according as   it has been written,     Jacob   I loved,   and Esau       I hated.
What   then   shall we say?     Unrighteousness   with     God [is there]?   May it not be!

For to     Moses   he says,   I will shew mercy to   whomsoever     I shew mercy,   and
I will feel compassion on   whomsoever     I feel compassion.
So   then [it is]   not   of him that   wills,   nor   of him that   runs,   but   who 3
shews 4 mercy 5   of 1 God. 2
For says     the   scripture   to   Pharoah,     For   this same thing     I raised out
thee,   so that   I might shew   in   thee   my power,       and   so that
should be declared   my name       in   all   the   earth.
So   then   to whom   he will   he shews mercy,   and whom     he will   he hardens.
Thou wilt say   then   to me,   Why   yet   does he find fault?   for the 4     purpose 5   of 6 him 7
who 1   has 2 resisted? 3
Yea, rather,   O   man,   thou 3   who 1   art 2   that   answers against     God?
Shall say 2   the 1   thing 2 formed 3   to him who   formed [it],   Why   me   madest thou   thus?
Or   has not     authority   the   potter   over the   clay,   out of   the   same
lump   to make   one     to 2   honour 3   vessel, 1   and another     to   dishonour?
And if     willing 2     God 1   to shew     wrath   and   to make known   his power
bore   in   much   longsuffering   vessels   of wrath
fitted   for   destruction;
and   that   he might make known   the   riches   of his glory       upon   vessels
of mercy,   which   he before prepared   for   glory,
whom 2   also 3   he 4 called 5   us 1   not   only   from among [the]   Jews,   but   also
from among [the]   nations?
As   also   in     Hosea   he says,   I will call   that which [is]   not   my people     My people
  and   that   not   beloved,   Beloved.
And   it shall be,   in   the   place   where   it was said   to them,   Not   people 2   my [are] 1   ye,
there   they shall be called   sons   of God 3   [the] 1 living. 2
Esaias 2   but 1   cries   concerning     Israel,   If should 8 be 9     the 1   number 2   of 3 the 4
sons 5   of 6 Israel 7   as   the   sand   of the   sea,   the   remnant   shall be saved:
for [the] matter     [he is] concluding   and   cutting short   in   righteousness:   because
a matter   cut short   we do 3 [the] 1   Lord 2   upon   the   earth.
And   according as   said before   Esaias,   Unless [the]     Lord   of Hosts
had left   us   a seed,   as   Sodom   we should have become,     and
as   Gomorrah   we should have been made like.
What   then   shall we say?   That   Gentiles   that   follow not after     righteousness,
attained   righteousness,   but righteousness     that [is]   by   faith.
But Israel,     following after   a law   of righteousness,   to   a law   of righteousness
did not attain.
Why?   Because [it was]   not   by   faith,   but   as   by   works   of law.
For they stumbled     at the   stone     of stumbling,
according as   it has been written,   Behold   I place   in   Sion   a stone   of stumbling   and
rock   of offence:   and   every one   that   believes   on   him   shall not be ashamed.
