CHAPTER 22
Men,   brethren   and   fathers,   hear   my     to 2   you 3   now 4
defence. 1
And having heard     that   in the   Hebrew   language   he spoke to   them,
the 3 more 4   they 1 kept 2   quiet;   and   he says,
I   indeed   am   a man   a Jew,   born   in   Tarsus     of Cilicia,
but brought up     in   this city       at   the   feet   of Gamaliel,
having been instructed   according to [the]   exactness   of the   ancestral   law,
a 2 zealous 3 one 4   being 1     for God,   even as   all   ye   are   this day;
who   this     way   persecuted   unto   death,   binding   and   delivering up
to   prisons   both men     and   women;
as   also   the   high priest   bears witness   to me,   and   all   the   elderhood;   from   whom
also   letters   having received   to   the   brethren,   to   Damascus
I went,   to bring   also   those   there   who were,   bound   to   Jerusalem,
in order that   they might be punished.
And it came to pass     to me   journeying   and   drawing near     to Damascus,   about
mid-day   suddenly   out of   the   heaven   shone   a light 2   great 1   about
  εμε
  me.
And I fell     to   the   ground,   and   heard   a voice   saying   to me,   Saul,
Saul,   why   me   persecutest thou?
And I     answered,   Who   art thou,   Lord?   And he said     to   me,   I   am
Jesus   the   Nazaraean,   whom   thou   persecutest.
But those     with 2   me 3   being 1   the   indeed 2   light 1   beheld,   and   alarmed
were,   but the     voice   did not hear     of him   speaking   to me.
And I said,     What   shall I do,   Lord?   And the     Lord   said   to   me,
Having risen up   go   to   Damascus,   and there   thee   it shall be told   concerning
all things   which   it has been appointed   thee   to do.
And as     I did not see     from   the   glory   of that light,
being led by the hand   by   those   being with   me,   I came   to   Damascus.
And a certain Ananias,       a man 2   pious 1   according to   the   law,
borne witness to   by   all   the   dwelling 2 [there] 3   Jews, 1
coming   to   me   and   standing by   said   to me,   Saul 2   brother, 1   look up.
And I   in the same hour       looked up   on   him.
And he     said,   The   God   of our fathers       appointed   thee
to know   his will,       and   to see   the   Just One,   and   to hear   a voice
out of   his mouth;
for   thou shalt be   a witness   for him   to   all   men   of what   thou hast seen
and   heard.
And   now   why   delayest thou?   Having arisen   be baptized   and   wash away
thy sins,     calling on   the   name   of the   Lord.
It 2 came 3 to 4 pass 5   and 1   to me   having returned   to   Jerusalem,   and
on praying 2   my 1   in   the   temple,   I became     in   a trance,
and   saw   him   saying   to me,   Make haste   and   go away   with   speed   out of
Jerusalem,   because   they will not receive     thy     testimony
concerning   me.
And I   said,   Lord,   themselves   know   that   I   was   imprisoning   and
beating   in every synagogue       those   believing   on   thee;
and   when   was poured out   the   blood   of Stephen   thy witness,       also
myself   was   standing by   and   consenting   to the   putting to death   of him,   and
keeping   the   garments   of those who   killed   him.
And   he said   to   me,   Go,   for   I   to   nations   afar off   will send forth   thee.
And they heard     him   until   this     word,   and   lifted up   their voice,
    saying,   away with   from 4   the 5   earth 6   such 1 a 2 one, 3
for not 3     it 1 is 2 fit   he   should live.
And as were 2 crying 3 out 4     they,   and   casting off [their]     garments,   and
dust 2   throwing 1   into   the   air,
commanded 4   him 5   the 1   chief 2 captain 3   to be brought   into   the   fortress,
bidding   by 5 scourges 6   to 2 be 3 examined 4   him, 1   that   he might know   for   what   cause
thus   they cried out   against him.
But as     he stretched forward   him   with the   thongs   said 2   to 3   the 4
who 6 stood 7 by 8   centurion 5     Paul, 1     A man   a Roman   and
uncondemned   it is lawful   to you   to scourge?
And having 3 heard 4 [it] 5     the 1   centurion, 2   having gone   he reported [it]   to the
chief captain   saying,   See   what   art thou about   to do?   For this man
  a Roman   is.
And having come up     the   chief captain   said   to him,   Tell   me,     thou 2   a 3 Roman 4
ει   ο   δε   εφη   ναι
art? 1   And he     said,   Yes.
And answered 4     the 1   chief 2 captain, 3   I   with a great   sum   this citizenship
I bought.   And Paul       said,   But I     also
was [free] born.
Immediately   therefore   departed   from   him   those   being about   him 3
to 1 examine, 2   and   the   chief captain   also   was afraid   having ascertained   that   a Roman
he is,   and   because   he had bound him.
And on the     morrow,   desiring   to know   the   certainty   wherefore
he is accused   by   the   Jews,   he loosed   him   from   the   bonds,   and
commanded   to come   the   chief priests   and   whole 2   their sanhedrim, 1
and   having brought down     Paul   he set [him]   among   them.
