And having journeyed through

Amphipolis

and

Apollonia

they came

to

θεσσαλονικην

ην

συναγωγη

των

ιουδαιων

Thessalonica,

where

was

the

synagogue

of the

Jews.

κατα

δε

το

ειωθος

τω

παυλω

εισηλθεν

προς

αυτους

και

επι

And acccording to

the

custom

♦

with Paul

he went in

to

them,

and

for

σαββατα

τρια

διελεγετο

αυτοις

απο

των

γραφων

sabbaths 2

reasoned

with them

from

the

scriptures,

διανοιγων

και

παρατιθεμενος

οτι

τον

χριστον

εδει

παθειν

opening

and

setting forth

that

the 3

Christ 4

it 1 behoved 2

to have suffered

και

αναστηναι

εκ

νεκρων

και

οτι

ουτος

εστιν

ο

χριστος

ιησους

and

to have risen

from among

[the] dead,

and

that

this

is

the

Christ

Jesus,

ον		εγω		καταγγελλω		υμιν
whom		I		announce		to you.

εξ

αυτων

επεισθησαν

και

προσεκληρωθησαν

τω

παυλω

και

And

some

of

them

were obedient,

and

joined themselves

to Paul

and

τω

σιλα

των

τε

σεβομενων

ελληνων

πολυ

πληθος

γυναικων

τε

♦

to Silas,

and of the

♦

worshipping

Greeks

a great

multitude,

and of women 3

♦

having taken to [them]

evil, 5

πολιν

επισταντες

τε

οικια

having collected a crowd

roused in 3 tumult 4

city; 2

and having assaulted

house

εζητουν

αγαγειν

they sought

to

the

people;

but not having found

them

they dragged

Jason

and

certain

αδελφους

τους

πολιταρχας

βοωντες

οικουμενην

brethren

before

the

city magistrates,

crying out,

Those who

contrary to

decrees

And they troubled

the

crowd

and

the

city magistrates

hearing

these things.

λαβοντες

ικανον

παρα

του

ιασονος

και

των

λοιπων

απελυσαν

And

having taken

♦

security

from

♦

Jason

and

the

rest

they let go 2

αυτους
them. 1

οι

δε

αδελφοι

ευθεως

δια

της

νυκτος

εξεπεμψαν

τον

τε

But the

brethren

immediately

by

♦

night

sent away

both Paul

♦

παυλον

και

τον

σιλαν

εις

βεροιαν

οιτινες

παραγενομενοι

εις

την

and

♦

Silas

to

Beroea;

who,

being arrived,

into

the

συναγωγην		των		ιουδαιων		απηεσαν
synagogue		of the		Jews		went.

ουτοι

δε

ησαν

ευγενεστεροι

των

εν

θεσσαλονικη

οιτινες

And these

were

more noble

than those

in

Thessalonica,

who

εδεξαντο

τον

λογον

μετα

πασης

προθυμιας

το

καθ

ημεραν

ανακρινοντες

received

the

word

with

all

readiness,

♦

daily

♦

examining

τας

γραφας

ει

εχοι

ταυτα

ουτως

the

scriptures

if

were

these things

so.

πολλοι

μεν

ουν

εξ

αυτων

επιστευσαν

και

των

ελληνιδων

Many

indeed

therefore

from among

them

believed,

and

of the

Grecian 2

γυναικων

των

ευσχημονων

και

ανδρων

ουκ

ολιγοι

women 3

honourable 1

and

men

not

a few.

εγνωσαν

απο

της

θεσσαλονικης

ιουδαιοι

εν

But when

Beroea

was announced

by

Paul

the

word

of God,

they came

also there

stirring up		the		crowds.

And immediately

But those

conducting

Paul

brought

him

unto

Athens;

and

εντολην

προς

τον

σιλαν

και

τιμοθεον

ινα

ως

ταχιστα

having received

a command

to

Silas

and

Timotheus,

that

as

quickly as possible

ελθωσιν		προς		αυτον		εξηεσαν
they should come		to		him,		they departed.

He reasoned

therefore

the

synagogue

with the

Jews

and

those who

τη

αγορα

κατα

πασαν

ημεραν

προς

τους

worshipped,

and

in

the

market-place

every day

with

those who

παρατυγχανοντας
met with [him].

επικουρειων

και

των

στωικων

φιλοσοφων

But some

of the

Epicureans

and

the

Stoics,

philosophers,

συνεβαλλον

ελεγον

θελοι

ο

encountered

him.

And

some

said,

What

to say?

And some,

Of foreign

gods (lit. demons)

he seems

καταγγελευς

a proclaimer

to be,

because [of]

Jesus

and

the

resurrection

to them

ευηγγελιζετο
he announced the glad tidings.

And having taken hold

of him,

to

the

Mars’

hill

the brought [him],

Are we able

all things

very religious (lit. very reverent to demons)

I behold;

To an unknown

God.

Whom

therefore

αγνοουντες

ευσεβειτε

καταγγελλω

υμιν

not knowing

ye reverence,

him

I

announce

to you.

God

who

made

the

world

and

all things

that [are]

in

it,

he

ουρανου

γης

κυριος

υπαρχων

of heaven

and

earth

Lord

being,

not

in

hand-made

temples

dwells,

ουδε

υπο

χειρων

ανθρωπων

θεραπευεται

προσδεομενος

τινος

nor

by

hands

of men

is served

as needing

anything,

αυτος

διδους

πασιν

ζωην

και

πνοην

κατα

παντα

himself

giving

to all

life

and

breath

in every [respect];

and he made

blood

nation

of men,

to dwell

upon

all

the

to seek

the

Lord;

if

perhaps

they might feel after

him

might find him,

Offspring

therefore

we ought not

to think

to gold

or

to silver

or

to stone,

a graven thing

of art

and

imagination

of man,		that which [is]		divine		to be		like.

to repent,

he set

a day

in

which

he is about

to judge

the

habitable world

in

δικαιοσυνη

ανδρι

ω

ωρισεν

πιστιν

παρασχων

πασιν

righteousness,

by

a man

whom

he appointed;

to all

[in] having raised		him		from among		[the] dead.

ακουσαντες

αναστασιν

εχλευαζον

And having heard

a resurrection

of [the] dead,

some

mocked,

and some

♦

ειπον

ακουσομεθα

σου

παλιν

περι

τουτου

said,

We will hear

thee

again

concerning

this.

ουτως

ο

παυλος

εξηλθεν

εκ

μεσου

αυτων

And

thus

♦

Paul

went out

from

[the] midst

of them.

τινες

δε

ανδρες

κολληθεντες

αυτω

επιστευσαν

εν

οις

και

But some

♦

men

joining themselves

to him

believed;

among

whom

also

διονυσιος

ο

αρεοπαγιτης

και

γυνη

ονοματι

δαμαρις

και

ετεροι

συν

[was] Dionysius

the

Areopagite,

and

a woman

by name

Damaris,

and

others

with

αυτοις
them.
