CHAPTER 5
But man     a certain,   Ananias   by name,   with   Sapphira   his wife,
sold   a possession,
and   kept back   from   the   value,   being aware of [it]   also     wife 2   his, 1   and
  having brought   a certain part     at 3   the 4   feet 5   of 6 the 7   apostles 8   laid 1 [it]. 2
But said     Peter,   Ananias,   why   did fill 2     Satan 1   thy heart,
to 3 lie 4 to 5   [for] 1 thee 2   the   Spirit   the   Holy,   and   to keep back
from   the   value   of the   estate?
Not 6   remaining 1   to 2 thee 3   did 4 it remain? 5   and   having been sold,   in   thine own
authority   it was [not]?   why     didst thou purpose   in     thy heart     this thing?
Thou didst not lie     to men,   but     to God.
And hearing 2     Ananias 1   these words,       falling down   expired.
And   came   fear 2   great 1   upon   all   who   heard   these things.
And having arisen     the   younger [men]   swathed   him,   and   having carried out
buried [him].
And it came to pass     about   hours 2   three 1   afterwards   also   his wife,       not
knowing   what   had come to pass,   came in.
And answered     her     Peter,   Tell   me   if   for so much   the   estate   ye sold?
And she     said,   Yes,   for so much.
And Peter       said   to   her,   Why [is it]   that   ye agreed together
to tempt   the   Spirit   of [the] Lord?   Lo,   the   feet   of those who   buried
thy husband       [are] at   the   door,   and   they shall carry out   thee.
And she fell down     immediately   at     his feet     and   expired.
And having come in     the   young [men]   found   her   dead;   and   having carried out
they buried [her]   by   her husband.
And   came 3   fear 2   great 1   upon   whole 2   the 1   assembly,   and   upon   all
who   heard   these things.
And by     the   hands   of the   apostles   came to pass   signs 2   and 3   wonders 4
among 5   the 6   people 7   many; 1   (and   they were   with 2 one 3 accord 4   all 1   in   the   porch

might overshadow   some one   of them.
And came together     also   the   multitude   of the   round 2 about 3   cities 1   to
Jerusalem,   bringing   sick ones   also   those beset   by   spirits 2
unclean 1   who   were healed 2   all. 1
And having risen up     the   high priest   and   all   those   with   him,   which   is [the]
sect   of the   Sadducees,   were filled   with anger,
and   laid     hands 2   their 1   on   the   apostles   and   put
them   in [the]   hold 2   public. 1
But an angel     of [the] Lord   during   the   night   opened   the   doors   of the
prison,   and having brought out 2     them 1   said,
Go ye,   and   standing   speak   in   the   temple   to the   people   all   the
words     of life 2   this. 1
And having heard     they entered   at   the   dawn   into   the   temple,   and   were teaching.
But having come     the   high priest   and   those   with   him,   they called together   the
sanhedrim   and   all   the   elderhood   of the   sons   of Israel,   and   sent
to   the   prison   to have them brought.
    But the     officers   having come   not 2   did find 1   them   in   the   prison;
and having returned     they reported,
saying,     The   indeed 2   prison 1   we found   shut   with   all
security,   and   the   keepers   without   standing   before   the   doors;
but having opened,     within   no one   we found.
And when     they heard   these words       both the     priest   and   the
captain   of the   temple   and   the   chief priests   were perplexed   concerning   them,   what
might 2 be 3     this. 1
But having come     a certain one   reported   to them,   saying,     Lo,   the
men   whom   ye put   in   the   prison   are   in   the   temple   standing   and
teaching   the   people.
Then   having 3 gone 4   the 1   captain 2   with   the   officers   brought   them,   not
with   violence,   for they feared     the   people,   that   they might be stoned.
And having brought     them   they set [them]   in   the   sanhedrim.   And
asked 4   them 5   the 1   high 2 priest, 3
saying,   Not 3   by 4 a 5 charge 6   did 1 we 2 charge   you   not   to teach   in   this name?
and   lo,   ye have filled     Jerusalem   with your teaching,
and   purpose   to bring   upon   us   the   blood   of this man.

    But answering 5       Peter 1   and 2   the 3   apostles 4   said,   To 4 obey 5
it 1 is 2 necessary 3   God   rather   than   men.
The   God   of our father       raised up   Jesus,   whom   ye
killed,   having hanged   on   a tree.
Him     God   a chief   and   Saviour   exalted   by the   right hand   of him,
to give   repentance     to Israel   and   remission   of sins.
And   we   are   of him   witnesses     of things 2   these, 1   and   the 2

Spirit 3   also 1   the   Holy,   which   gave 2     God 1   to those   that obey   him.
But they     having heard   were cut [to the heart],   and   took counsel   to put to death
them.
    Having 5 risen 6 up 7   but 1   a 2 certain 3 [man] 4   in   the   sanhedrim   a Pharisee,   by name
Gamaliel,   a teacher of the law,   honoured   by all   the   people,   commanded   out 3
for 4 a 5 short 6 while 7     the 8   apostles 9   to 1 put, 2
and said     to   them,   Men   Israelites,   take heed   to yourselves
as regards   these men       what   ye are about   to do;
before 2   for 1   these     days   rose up   Theudas,   affirming   to 2 be 3   somebody 4
himself, 1   to whom   were joined   a number   of men,   about   four hundred;   who
was put to death,   and   all   as many as   were persuaded   by him   were dispersed   and
came   to   nothing.
After   this one   rose up   Judas   the   Galilean   in   the   days   of the
registration,   and   drew away   people 2   much 1   after   him;   and he   perished,
and   all   as many as   were persuaded   by him   were scattered abroad.
And     now   I say   to you,   Withdraw   from   these men,       and
let alone 2   them, 1   for   if   be 6   from 7   men 8   this 1 counsel 2       or 3
this 4 work, 5       it will be overthrown;
but if     from   God   it be,   ye are not able     to overthrow   it,   lest   also
fighters against God   ye be found.
And they were persuaded     to him;   and   having called to [them]   the   apostles,
having beaten   they enjoined [them]   not   to speak   in   the   name     of Jesus,   and
released   them.
They     therefore   departed   rejoicing   from   [the] presence   of the   sanhedrim
that   for   the   name   of him   they were counted worthy   to be dishonoured.
And every     day   in   the   temple   and   in the houses     they ceased not
teaching   and   announcing the glad tidings--   Jesus   the   Christ.
