CHAPTER 2
And it came to pass     in   those days       went 3 out 4   a 1 decree 2   from
Ceasar   Augustus,   that should be registered   all   the   habitable world;
this registration       first   took place   when was 2 governor 3     of 4 Syria 5
Cyrenius. 1
And   went 2   all 1   to be registered,   each   to   his own city:

and went 3 up 4     also 2   Joseph 1   from     Galilee   out of   [the] city   Nazareth   to
Judaea,   to   a city   of David   which   is called   Bethlehem,   because   of his being
of   [the] house   and   family   of David,
to register himself     Mary   who   was betrothed   to him   as wife,   she being
great with child.
And it came to pass     in   the [time]   they were     there   were 3 fulfilled 4   the 1
days 2   for her bringing froth,
and   she brought forth   her son       the   first-born,   and
wrapped in 2 swaddling 3 clothes 4   him, 1   and   laid   him   in   the   manger,   because
there was not     for them   a place   in   the   inn.
And   shepherds   were   in   the   country 2     same, 1   lodging in the fields   and
keeping   watch     by night   over   their flock;
and   behold,   an angel   of [the] Lord   stood by   them,   and   [the] glory   of [the] Lord
shone around   them,   and   the feared   [with] fear 2   great. 1
    And   said 3   to 4 them 5   the 1   angel, 2   Fear not;     behold 2   for, 1
I announce glad tidings   to you   [of] joy 2   great, 1   which   shall be   to all   the   people;
for   was born   to you   to-day   a Saviour,   who   is   Christ   [the] Lord,   in   [the] city
of David.
And   this [is]   to you   the   sign:   ye shall find   a babe   wrapped in swaddling clothes,
lying   in   the   manger.
And   suddenly   there was   with   the   angel   a multitude   of [the] host 2   heavenly, 1
praising     God,   and   saying,
Glory   in   [the] highest   to God,   and   on   earth   peace,   in   men   good pleasure.
And   it came to pass,   as   departing 3   from 4   them 5   into 6   the 7   heaven 8   the 1   angels, 2
that   the   men   the   shepherds   said   to   one another,   Let us go through   indeed
as far as   Bethlehem,   and   let us see   this thing       that   has come to pass   which   the
Lord   made known   to us.
And   they came   having hasted   and   found   both Mary       and     Joseph,
and   the   babe   lying   in   the   manger.
And having seen,     they made known abroad   concerning   the   saying   which
had been told   them   concerning     this little child.
And   all   who   heard   wondered   concerning   the things which
had been spoken   by   the   shepherds   to   them.
But Mary       all 2   kept 1   these sayings,
pondering [them]   in   her heart.
And   returned 3   the 1   shepherds, 2   glorifying   and   praising     God   for
all things   which   they had heard   and   seen,   as   it was said   to   them.
And   when   were fulfilled   days 2   eight 1   for the   circumcising   the   little child,
was 3 called 4   his 1 name 2       Jesus,   which [he]   was called   by   the   angel
before     was 2 conceived 3   he 1   in   the   womb.
And   when   were fulfilled   the   days   for their purification
according to   the   law   of Moses,   they brought   him   to   Jerusalem
to present   to the   Lord,
as   it has been written   in [the]   law   of [the] Lord,   That   every   male   opening
a womb   holy 4   to 5 the 6   Lord 7   shall 1 be 2 called; 3
and     to offer   a sacrifice   according to   that which   has been said   in   [the] law
of [the] Lord,   A pair   of turtle doves   or   two   young   of pigeons.
And   behold,   there was   a man   in   Jerusalem   whose   name [was]   Simeon;   and
this man       [was] just   and   pious,   waiting for
[the] consolation     of Israel,   and   [the] Spirit 2   Holy 1   was   upon   him.
And   it was   to him   divinely communicated   by   the   Spirit   the   Holy
that he should not see     death   before     he should see   the   Christ   of [the] Lord.
And   he came   in   the   Spirit   into   the   temple;   and   when brought 2 in 3
the 1   parents 2   the   little child   Jesus,   that they might do
according 3 to 4   what 5 had 6 become 7 customary 8     by 9 the 10   law 11   for 1
him, 2
he also     received   him   into     arms, 2   his, 1   and   blessed
God,   and   said,
Now   thou lettest go   thy bondman,       O Master,   according to   thy word,
    in   peace;
for   have 3 seen 4   mine 1 eyes 2       thy salvation,
    which   thou hast prepared   before   [the] face   of all   the   peoples;
a light   for   revelation   of [the] Gentiles   and   glory   of thy people     Israel.
And   were 5   Joseph 1   and 2   his 3 mother 4       wondering   at
the things which   were spoken   concerning   him.
And   blessed 2   them 3   Simeon, 1   and   said   to   Mary   his mother,
Lo,   this [child]   is set   for [the]   fall   and   rising up   of many   in
Israel,   and   for   a sign   spoken against;
(and   of thee   also   thy 6     soul 7   shall 3 go 4 through 5   a 1 sword;) 2   so that
may be revealed     of   many   hearts   [the] reasonings.
And   there was   Anna   a prophetess,   daughter   of Phanuel,   of   [the] tribe   of Asher,   she
was advanced   in   days 2   many, 1   having lived   years 2   with 3   a 4 husband 5   seven 1
from   her virginity,
    and   she   [was] a widow   about 2   years 4   of 1 eighty-four, 3   who 5   not 7
departed 6   from   the   temple,   with fastings   and   supplications   serving   night   and
day:
and   she   at the same     hour   coming up   gave praise   to the   Lord,   and
spoke   concerning   him   to all   those   waiting for   redemption   in
Jerusalem.
And   whe   they had completed   all things     according to   the   law   of [the] Lord
they returned   to     Galilee,   to     city 3   their 1 [own], 2   Nazareth.
And the     little child   grew,   and   became strong   in spirit,   being filled
with wisdom,   and   [the] grace   of God   was   upon   him.
And   went 3   his parents       yearly     to   Jerusalem   at the
feast   of the   passover.
And   when   he was   years 2 [old] 3   twelve, 1   having 5 gone 6 up 7   they 4   to
Jerusalem   according to   the   custom   of the   feast,
and   having completed   the   days,   as returned 2       they 1
remained 6 behind 7   Jesus 2   the 3   child 4   in   Jerusalem,   and   knew 5 [it] 6 not 7
Joseph 1   and 2   his 3 mother; 4
but supposing     him   in   the   company   to be   they went   of day’s   journey,   and
sought   him   among   the   relations   and   among   the   acquaintances:
and   not   having found   him   they returned   to   Jerusalem,   seeking   him.
And   it came to pass   after   days 2   three 1   they found   him   in   the   temple,
sitting   in   [the] midst   of the   teachers,   both   hearing   them   and
questioning   them.
And were 5 amazed 6     all 1   those 2   hearing 3   him 4   at     [his] understanding
and     answers 2   his. 1
And   seeing   him   they were astonished:   and   to   him   his mother
said,   Child,   why   hast thou done   to us   thus?   behold,   thy father
and I   distressed   were seeking   thee.
And   he said   to   them,   Why [is it]   that   ye were seeking   me?   knew ye not     that
in   the [affairs]   of my Father       it behoves   to 2 be 3   me? 1
And   they   understood not     the   word   which   he spoke   to them.
And   he went down   with   them   and   came   to   Nazareth,   and   he was
subject   to them.   And   his mother       kept   all
these things       in   her heart.
And   Jesus   advanced   in wisdom   and   stature,   and   in favour   with   God   and
men.
