Gospel of Mark

CHAPTER 5
And   they came   to   the   other side   of the   sea,   to   the   country   of the
Gadarenes.
And   on his having gone forth     out of   the   ship,   immediately   met   him
out of   the   tombs   a man   with   an unclean spirit,
who [his]     dwelling   had   in   the   tombs;   and   not even   with chains
anyone (lit. no one)   was able   him   to bind,
because   that   he   often   with fetters   and   chains   had been bound,   and
had 3 been 4 torn 5 asunder 6   by 7   him 8   the 1   chains, 2   and   the   fetters   had been shattered,
and   no one   him   was able   to subdue.
And   continually   night   and   day   in   the   mountains   and   in   the   tombs
he was   crying   and   cutting   himself   with stones.
And having seen       Jesus   from   afar,   he ran   and   did homage
to him,
and   crying   with a voice 2   loud 1   he said,   What   to me   and   to thee,   Jesus,   Son
of God   the   Most High?   I adjure   thee     by God,   not 3   me 2   torment. 1
For he was saying     to him,   Come forth,   the   spirit   the   unclean,   out of   the
man.
And   he asked   him,   What [is]   thy name?     And   he answered,   saying,
Legion   my name [is],     because   many   we are.
And   he besought   him   much,   that   not   them   he would send   out of   the   country.
    Now there was     there   just at   the   mountains   a herd 2   of 3 swine 4   great 1   feeding;
and   besought 4   him 5   all 1   the 2   demons, 3   saying,   Send   us
into   the   swine,   that   into   them   we may enter.
And   allowed 2   them 3   immediately 4     Jesus. 1   And   having gone out   the
spirits   the   unclean   entered   into   the   swine,   and   rushed 3   the 1
herd 2   down   the   steep   into   the   sea,   (now they were     about
two thousand),   and   they were choked   in   the   sea.
And those who     fed   the   swine   fled,   and   announced [it]   to
the   city   and   to   the   country.   And   they went out   to see   what   it is   that
has been done.
And   they come   to     Jesus,   and   see   the   possessed by demons
sitting   and   clothed   and   of sound mind,   him who had     the
legion:   and   they were afraid.
And   related 6   to 7 them 8   those 1 who 2   had 3 seen 4 [it] 5   how   it happened   to him
possessed by demons,   and   concerning   the   swine.
And   they began   to beseech   him   to depart   from   their borders.
And   having 2 entered 3   he 1   into   the   ship,   besought 8   him 9   he 1 who 2
had 3 been 4 possessed 5 by 6 demons 7   that   he might be   with   him.
But   Jesus   did not suffer     him,   but   says   to him,   Go   to
thy house     to   thine own,     and   announce   to them   how much   for thee   the
Lord   did,   and   pitied   thee.
And   he departed   and   began   to proclaim   in     Decapolis,   how much   had 2 done 3
for 4 him 5     Jesus; 1   and   all   wondered.
And   having 2 passed 3 over 4     Jesus 1   in   the   ship   again   into   the   other side,
was 4 gathered 5   a 1 crowd 3   great 2   to   him,   and   he was   by   the   sea.
And   behold,   comes   one   of the   rulers of synagogue,   by name   Jarius,   and   seeing
him,   falls   at   his feet;
and   he besought   him   much,   saying     My little daughter
is at the last extremity,     [I pray] that   having come   thou wouldest lay   on her [thy]
hands,   so that   she may be cured,   and   she shall live.
And   he departed   with   him,   and   followed 4   him 5   a 1 crowd 3   great, 2   and
pressed on   him.
And   a woman 2   certain   being   with   a flux   of blood   years 2   twelve, 1
and   much   having suffered   under   many   physicians,   and   having spent
her 2 means 3       all, 1   and   in no way   having benefited   but   rather   to 3
worse 4     having 1 come, 2
having heard   concerning     Jesus,   having come   in   the   crowd   behind,   touched
his garment;
for she said,       If but   his garments       I shall touch,   I shall be cured.
And   immediately   was dried up   the   fountain   of her blood,       and   she knew
in [her]   body   that   she was healed   from   the   scourge.
And   immediately     Jesus,   knowing   in   himself [that]   the   out 2 of 3   him 4
power 1   had gone forth,   having turned   in   the   crowd,   said,   Who   of me   touched
the   garments?
And   said 3   to 4 him 5   his 1 disciples, 2       Thou seest   the   crowd
pressing on   thee,   and   sayest thou,   Who   me   touched?
And   he looked round   to see   her who   this   had done.
But the     woman   being frightened   and   trembling,   knowing   what   had been done   upon
her,   came   and   fell down before   him,   and   told   him   all   the   truth.
And he     said   to her,   Daughter,   thy faith       has cured   thee;   go   in
peace,   and   be   sound   from     scourge 2   thy. 1
[While] yet   he is speaking,     they come   from   the
ruler of synagogue’s [house],   saying,     Thy daughter       is dead;
why   still   troublest thou   the   teacher?
But Jesus       immediately,   having heard   the   word   spoken,   says
to the   ruler of the synagogue,   Not 2   fear; 1   only   believe.
And   he suffered     no one   him   to accompany,   except     Peter
and   James   and   John   the   brother   of James.
And   he comes   to   the   house   of the   ruler of the synagogue,   and   he beholds   a tumult,
[people] weeping   and   wailing   greatly.
And   having entered   he says   to them,   Why   make ye a tumult   and   weep?   the   child
is not dead,     but   sleeps.
And   they laughed at   him.   But he     having put out   all,   takes with [him]   the
father   of the   child   and   the   mother   and   those   with   him,   and
enters in   where   was 3   the 1   child 2   lying.
And   having taken   the   hand   of the   child,   he says   to her,   Talitha,   koumi;   which
is,   being interpreted,     Damsel,   to thee   I say,   arise.
And   immediately   arose   the   damsel   and   walked,   for she was     years 2
twelve [old]. 1   And   they were amazed   with amazement 2   great. 1
And   he charged   them   much   that   no one   should know   this;   and   he said
[that something] should be given   to her   to eat.
