Gospel of Matthew

 

CHAPTER 6
  1  προσεχετε   την   ελεημοσυνην   υμων   μη   ποιειν   εμπροσθεν   των  
    Beware   your alms   ♦   ♦   not   to do   before   ♦  
ανθρωπων   προς   το   θεαθηναι   αυτοις   ει   δε   μηγε   μισθον  
men,   in order to be seen   ♦   ♦   by them:   otherwise   ♦   ♦   reward  
ουκ   εχετε   παρα   τω   πατρι   υμων   τω   εν   τοις   ουρανοις    
ye have not   ♦   with   your Father   ♦   ♦   who [is]   in   the   heavens.    
  2  οταν   ουν   ποιης   ελεημοσυνην   μη   σαλπισης  
    When   therefore   thou doest   alms,   do not sound a trumpet   ♦  
εμπροσθεν   σου   ωσπερ   οι   υποκριται   ποιουσιν   εν   ταις   συναγωγαις   και   εν  
before   thee,   as   the   hypocrites   do   in   the   synagogues   and   in  
ταις   ρυμαις   οπως   δοξασθωσιν   υπο   των   ανθρωπων   αμην   λεγω   υμιν  
the   streets,   that   they may have glory   from   ♦   men.   Verily   I say   to you,  
απεχουσιν   τον   μισθον   αυτων    
they have   their reward.   ♦   ♦    
  3  σου   δε   ποιουντος   ελεημοσυνην   μη   γνωτω   η  
    But thou   ♦   doing   alms   let not know 4   ♦   thy 1 left 2 hand 3  
αριστερα   σου   τι   ποιει   η   δεξια   σου    
♦   ♦   what   does   thy right hand,   ♦   ♦    
  4  οπως   η   σου   η   ελεημοσυνη   εν   τω   κρυπτω   και   ο   πατηρ  
    so that   may 3 be 4   thine 1   alms 2   ♦   in   ♦   secret:   and   thy Father   ♦  
σου   ο   βλεπων   εν   τω   κρυπτω   αυτος   αποδωσει   σοι   εν   τω   φανερω    
♦   who   sees   in   ♦   secret   himself   shall render   to thee   openly.   ♦   ♦    
  5  και   οταν   προσευχη   ουκ   εση   ωσπερ   οι   υποκριται   οτι   φιλουσιν  
    And   when   thou prayest,   thou shalt not be   ♦   as   the   hyprocrites,   for   they love  
εν   ταις   συναγωγαις   και   εν   ταις   γωνιαις   των   πλατειων   εστωτες  
in   the   synagogues   and   in   the   corners   of the   streets   standing  
προσευχεσθαι   οπως   αν   φανωσιν   τοις   ανθρωποις   αμην   λεγω  
to pray,   so that   they may appear   ♦   ♦   to men.   Verily   I say  
υμιν   οτι   απεχουσιν   τον   μισθον   αυτων    
to you,   that   they have   ♦   reward 2   their. 1    
  6  συ   δε   οταν   προσευχη   εισελθε   εις   το   ταμιειον   σου   και  
    But thou,   ♦   when   thou prayest,   enter   into   thy chamber,   ♦   ♦   and  
κλεισας   την   θυραν   σου   προσευξαι   τω   πατρι   σου   τω   εν   τω  
having shut   thy door,   ♦   ♦   pray   to thy Father   ♦   ♦   who [is]   in   ♦  
κρυπτω   και   ο   πατηρ   σου   ο   βλεπων   εν   τω   κρυπτω   αποδωσει  
secret;   and   thy Father   ♦   ♦   who   sees   in   ♦   secret   will render  
σοι   εν   τω   φανερω    
to thee   openly.   ♦   ♦    
  7  προσευχομενοι   δε   μη   βαττολογησητε   ωσπερ   οι  
    But when ye pray   ♦   do not use vain repetitions,   ♦   as   the  
εθνικοι   δοκουσιν   γαρ   οτι   εν   τη   πολυλογια   αυτων   εισακουσθησονται    
heathens:   for they think   ♦   that   in   ♦   much 2 speaking 3   their 1   they shall be heard.    
  8  μη   ουν   ομοιωθητε   αυτοις   οιδεν   γαρ   ο   πατηρ   υμων  
    Not 2   therefore 3   be like 1   to them:   for knows 3   ♦   your 1 Father 2   ♦   ♦  
ων   χρειαν   εχετε   προ   του   υμας   αιτησαι   αυτον    
of what things   need 3   ye 1 have 2   before   ♦   ye   ask   him.    
  9  ουτως   ουν   προσευχεσθε   υμεις   πατερ   ημων   ο   εν   τοις  
    Thus   therefore   pray   ye:   Our Father   ♦   who [art]   in   the  
ουρανοις   αγιασθητω   το   ονομα   σου    
heavens,   sanctified be   thy name;   ♦   ♦    
  10  ελθετω   η   βασιλεια   σου   γενηθητω   το   θελημα   σου   ως   εν  
    let come   thy kingdom;   ♦   ♦   let be done   thy will   ♦   ♦   as   in  
ουρανω   και   επι   της   γης    
heaven,   [so] also   upon   the   earth;    
  11  τον   αρτον   ημων   τον   επιουσιον   δος   ημιν   σημερον    
    our bread   ♦   ♦   the   needed   give   us   today;    
  12  και   αφες   ημιν   τα   οφειληματα   ημων   ως   και   ημεις   αφιεμεν  
    and   forgive   us   our debts,   ♦   ♦   as   also   we   forgive  
τοις   οφειλεταις   ημων    
our debtors;   ♦   ♦    
  13  και   μη   εισενεγκης   ημας   εις   πειρασμον   αλλα   ρυσαι   ημας   απο   του  
    And   lead not   ♦   us   into   temptation,   but   deliver   us   from   ♦  
πονηρου   οτι   σου   εστιν   η   βασιλεια   και   η   δυναμις   και   η   δοξα   εις   τους  
evil.   For   thine   is   the   kingdom   and   the   power   and   the   glory   to   the  
αιωνας   αμην    
ages.   Amen.    
  14  εαν   γαρ   αφητε   τοις   ανθρωποις   τα   παραπτωματα   αυτων  
    For if   ♦   ye forgive   ♦   men   their offences,   ♦   ♦  
αφησει   και   υμιν   ο   πατηρ   υμων   ο   ουρανιος    
will 5 forgive 6   also 8   you 7   your 1 Father 2   ♦   ♦   the 3   heavenly. 4    
  15  εαν   δε   μη   αφητε   τοις   ανθρωποις   τα   παραπτωματα   αυτων  
    but if   ♦   not 3   ye 1 forgive 2   ♦   men   their offences,   ♦   ♦  
ουδε   ο   πατηρ   υμων   αφησει   τα   παραπτωματα   υμων    
neither   ♦   Father 3   your 2   will forgive 1   your offences.   ♦   ♦    
  16  οταν   δε   νηστευητε   μη   γινεσθε   ωσπερ   οι   υποκριται  
    And when   ♦   ye fast,   be not   ♦   as   the   hypocrites,  
σκυθρωποι   αφανιζουσιν   γαρ   τα   προσωπα   αυτων   οπως  
downcast in countenance;   for they disfigure   ♦   their faces,   ♦   ♦   so that  
φανωσιν   τοις   ανθρωποις   νηστευοντες   αμην   λεγω   υμιν   οτι  
they may appear   ♦   to men   fasting.   Verily   I say   to you,   that  
απεχουσιν   τον   μισθον   αυτων    
they have   their reward.   ♦   ♦    
  17  συ   δε   νηστευων   αλειψαι   σου   την   κεφαλην   και   το   προσωπον
    But thou,   ♦   fasting,   anoint   thy   ♦   head,   and   thy 2 face 3   ♦
  σου   νιψαι    
  ♦   wash, 1    
  18  οπως   μη   φανης   τοις   ανθρωποις   νηστευων   αλλα   τω   πατρι
    so that   not   thou mayest not appear   ♦   to men   fasting,   but   ♦   to Father 2
  σου   τω   εν   τω   κρυπτω   και   ο   πατηρ   σου   ο   βλεπων   εν   τω  
  thy 1   who [is]   in   ♦   secret;   and   thy Father   ♦   ♦   who   sees   in   ♦  
κρυπτω   αποδωσει   σοι   εν   τω   φανερω    
secret   will render   to thee   openly.   ♦   ♦    
  19  μη   θησαυριζετε   υμιν   θησαυρους   επι   της   γης   οπου   σης
    Treasure not up   ♦   for yourselves   treasures   upon   the   earth,   where   moth
  και   βρωσις   αφανιζει   και   οπου   κλεπται   διορυσσουσιν   και   κλεπτουσιν    
  and   rust   spoil,   and   where   thieves   dig through   and   steal:    
  20  θησαυριζετε   δε   υμιν   θησαυρους   εν   ουρανω   οπου   ουτε   σης   ουτε  
    but treasure up   ♦   for youselves   treasures   in   heaven,   where   neither   moth   nor  
βρωσις   αφανιζει   και   οπου   κλεπται   ου   διορυσσουσιν   ουδε  
rust   spoils   and   where   theives   do not dig through   ♦   nor  
κλεπτουσιν    
steal:    
  21  οπου   γαρ   εστιν   ο   θησαυρος   υμων   εκει   εσται   και   η   καρδια   υμων    
    for where   ♦   is 3   ♦   treasure 2   your, 1   there   will be   also   ♦   heart 2   your. 1    
  22  ο   λυχνος   του   σωματος   εστιν   ο   οφθαλμος   εαν   ουν   ο  
    The   lamp   of the   body   is   the   eye;   if   therefore   thine eye  
οφθαλμος   σου   απλους   η   ολον   το   σωμα   σου   φωτεινον   εσται    
♦   ♦   single   be,   whole 2   thy body 1   ♦   ♦   light   will be.    
  23  εαν   δε   ο   οφθαλμος   σου   πονηρος   η   ολον   το   σωμα   σου  
    But if   ♦   ♦   thine eye   ♦   evil   be,   whole 2   thy body 1   ♦   ♦  
σκοτεινον   εσται   ει   ουν   το   φως   το   εν   σοι   σκοτος   εστιν   το   σκοτος  
dark   will be.   If   therefore   the   light   that [is]   in   thee   darkness   is,   the   darkness  
ποσον    
how great.    
  24  ουδεις   δυναται   δυσι   κυριοις   δουλευειν   η   γαρ   τον   ενα   μισησει  
    No one   is able   two   lords   to serve;   for either   ♦   the   one   he will hate,  
και   τον   ετερον   αγαπησει   η   ενος   ανθεξεται   και   του   ετερου  
and   the   other   he will love;   or [the]   one   he will hold to,   and   the   other  
καταφρονησει   ου   δυνασθε   θεω   δουλευειν   και   μαμμωνα    
he will despise.   Ye are not able   ♦   God 3   to 1 serve 2   and   mammon.    
  25  δια   τουτο   λεγω   υμιν   μη   μεριμνατε   τη   ψυχη  
    Because of   this   I say   to you,   be not careful   ♦   as to your life,   ♦  
υμων   τι   φαγητε   και   τι   πιητε   μηδε   τω   σωματι   υμων
♦   what   ye should eat   and   what   ye should drink;   nor   as to your body   ♦   ♦
  τι   ενδυσησθε   ουχι   η   ψυχη   πλειον   εστιν   της   τροφης   και   το  
  what   ye should put on.   Not 2   the 3   life 4   more 5   is 1   than the   food   and   the  
σωμα   του   ενδυματος    
body   than the   raiment?    
  26  εμβλεψατε   εις   τα   πετεινα   του   ουρανου   οτι   ου   σπειρουσιν  
    Look   at   the   birds   of the   heaven,   that   they sow not,   ♦  
ουδε   θεριζουσιν   ουδε   συναγουσιν   εις   αποθηκας   και   ο   πατηρ  
nor   do they reap,   nor   do they gather   into   granaries,   and   your Father   ♦  
υμων   ο   ουρανιος   τρεφει   αυτα   ουχ   υμεις   μαλλον   διαφερετε   αυτων    
♦   the   heavenly   feeds   them:   not 2   ye 3   much 4   are better 1   than they?    
  27  τις   δε   εξ   υμων   μεριμνων   δυναται   προσθειναι   επι   την  
    But which   ♦   out of   you   by being careful   is able   to add   to   his stature  
ηλικιαν   αυτου   πηχυν   ενα    
♦   ♦   cubit 2   one? 1    
  28  και   περι   ενδυματος   τι   μεριμνατε   καταμαθετε   τα   κρινα   του   αγρου  
    and   about   raiment   why   are ye careful?   observe   the   lilies   of the   field,  
πως   αυξανει   ου   κοπια   ουδε   νηθει    
how   they grow:   they labour not   ♦   nor   do they spin:    
  29  λεγω   δε   υμιν   οτι   ουδε   σολομων   εν   παση   τη   δοξη   αυτου  
    I 2 say 3   but 1   to you   that   not even   Solomon   in   all   his glory   ♦   ♦  
περιεβαλετο   ως   εν   τουτων    
was clothed   as   one   of these.    
  30  ει   δε   τον   χορτον   του   αγρου   σημερον   οντα   και   αυριον   εις  
    But if   ♦   the   grass   of the   field,   to day   which is   and   to-morrow   into  
κλιβανον   βαλλομενον   ο   θεος   ουτως   αμφιεννυσιν   ου   πολλω  
an oven   is cast,   ♦   God   thus   arrays,   [will he] not   much  
μαλλον   υμας   ολιγοπιστοι    
rather   you,   O [ye] of little faith?    
  31  μη   ουν   μεριμνησητε   λεγοντες   τι   φαγωμεν   η   τι   πιωμεν   η  
    not 2   therefore 3   be careful, 1   saying,   What   shall we eat?   or   what   shall we drink?   or  
τι   περιβαλωμεθα    
with what   shall we be clothed?    
  32  παντα   γαρ   ταυτα   τα   εθνη   επιζητει   οιδεν   γαρ   ο   πατηρ  
    For all   ♦   these things   the   nations   seek after.   For knows   ♦   your Father   ♦  
υμων   ο   ουρανιος   οτι   χρηζετε   τουτων   απαντων    
♦   the   heavenly   that   ye have need   of these 2 things 3   all. 1    
  33  ζητειτε   δε   πρωτον   την   βασιλειαν   του   θεου   και   την  
    But seek ye   ♦   first   the   kingdom   ♦   of God   and   his righteousness,  
δικαιοσυνην   αυτου   και   ταυτα   παντα   προστεθησεται   υμιν    
♦   ♦   and   these 2 things 3   all 1   shall be added   to you.    
  34  μη   ουν   μεριμνησητε   εις   την   αυριον   η   γαρ   αυριον  
    Not 2   therefore 3   be careful 1   for   the   morrow:   for the   ♦   morrow  
μεριμνησει   τα   εαυτης   αρκετον   τη   ημερα   η   κακια   αυτης    
shall be careful about   the [things]   of itself.   Sufficient   to the   day [is]   the   evil   of it.
