CHAPTER 5

ιδων

οχλους

ανεβη

εις

το

ορος

και

καθισαντος

But seeing

the

crowds,

he went up

into

the

mountain;

and

μαθηται

αυτου

to him

his disciples.

ανοιξας

στομα

αυτου

εδιδασκεν

αυτους

λεγων

And

having opened

his mouth

♦

he taught

them,

saying,

μακαριοι

οι

πτωχοι

τω

πνευματι

οτι

αυτων

εστιν

η

βασιλεια

των

Blessed [are]

the

poor

in spirit;

♦

for

theirs

is

the

kingdom

of the

ουρανων
heavens.

4

μακαριοι

οι

πενθουντες

οτι

αυτοι

παρακληθησονται

Blessed

they who

mourn;

for

they

shall be comforted.

5

μακαριοι

οι

πραεις

οτι

αυτοι

κληρονομησουσιν

την

γην

Blessed

the

meek;

for

they

shall inherit

the

earth.

μακαριοι

οι

πεινωντες

και

διψωντες

την

δικαιοσυνην

οτι

αυτοι

Blessed

they who

hunger

and

thirst after

righteousness;

for

they

χορτασθησονται
shall be filled.

μακαριοι

οι

ελεημονες

οτι

αυτοι

ελεηθησονται

Blessed

the

merciful;

for

they

shall find mercy.

καρδια

τον

θεον

οψονται

Blessed

pure

in heart;

for

ειρηνοποιοι

υιοι

θεου

κληθησονται

Blessed

the

peacemakers;

for

they

sons

of God

shall be called.

μακαριοι

οι

δεδιωγμενοι

ενεκεν

δικαιοσυνης

οτι

αυτων

Blessed

they who

have been persecuted

on account of

righteousness;

for

theirs

εστιν		η		βασιλεια		των		ουρανων
is		the		kingdom		of the		heavens.

μακαριοι

εστε

οταν

ονειδισωσιν

υμας

και

διωξωσιν

και

ειπωσιν

Blessed

are ye

when

they shall reproach

you,

and

shall persecute,

and

shall say

παν

πονηρον

ρημα

καθ

υμων

ψευδομενοι

ενεκεν

εμου

every

wicked

word

against

you,

lying,

on account of

me.

χαιρετε

και

αγαλλιασθε

οτι

ο

μισθος

υμων

πολυς

εν

τοις

Rejoice

and

exult,

for

your reward [is]

♦

♦

great

in

the

ουρανοις

ουτως

γαρ

εδιωξαν

τους

προφητας

τους

προ

υμων

heavens;

for thus

♦

they persecuted

the

prophets

who [were]

before

you.

υμεις

εστε

το

αλας

της

γης

εαν

δε

το

αλας

μωρανθη

εν

τινι

Ye

are

the

salt

of the

earth:

but if

♦

the

salt

become tasteless,

with

what

αλισθησεται

εις

ουδεν

ισχυει

ετι

ει

μη

βληθηναι

εξω

και

shall it be salted?

for

nothing

has it strength

any longer,

but

♦

to be cast

out,

and

καταπατεισθαι		υπο		των		ανθρωπων
to be trampled upon		by		♦		men.

υμεις

εστε

το

φως

του

κοσμου

ου

δυναται

πολις

κρυβηναι

επανω

Ye

are

the

light

of the

world,

cannot 3

be hid

on

ορους		κειμενη
a mountain		situated.

15

ουδε

καιουσιν

λυχνον

και

τιθεασιν

αυτον

υπο

τον

μοδιον

αλλ

Nor

do they light

a lamp

and

put

it

under

♦

the corn measure,

but

επι

την

λυχνιαν

και

λαμπει

πασιν

τοις

εν

τη

οικια

upon

the

lampstand;

and

it shines

for all

who

[are] in

the

house.

ουτως

λαμψατω

το

φως

υμων

εμπροσθεν

των

ανθρωπων

οπως

Thus

let shine

your light

♦

♦

before

men,

♦

so that

ιδωσιν

υμων

τα

καλα

εργα

και

δοξασωσιν

τον

πατερα

υμων

they may see

your

♦

good

works,

and

may glorify

your Father

♦

♦

τον		εν		τοις		ουρανοις
who [is]		in		the		heavens.

17

μη

νομισητε

οτι

ηλθον

καταλυσαι

τον

νομον

η

τους

προφητας

Think not

♦

that

I came

to abolish

the

law

or

the

prophets:

ουκ		ηλθον		καταλυσαι		αλλα		πληρωσαι
I came not		♦		to abolish,		but		to fulfil.

αμην

γαρ

λεγω

υμιν

εως

αν

παρελθη

ο

ουρανος

και

η

γη

For verily

♦

I say

to you,

Until

♦

shall pass away

the

heaven

and

the

earth,

ιωτα

εν

η

μια

κεραια

ου

μη

παρελθη

απο

του

νομου

εως

αν

iota 2

or

one

tittle

in no wise

♦

shall pass away

from

the

law

until

♦

παντα		γενηται
all		come to pass.

ος

εαν

ουν

λυση

μιαν

των

εντολων

τουτων

των

Whoever

♦

then

shall break

one

of these commandments

♦

♦

the

ελαχιστων

και

διδαξη

ουτως

τους

ανθρωπους

ελαχιστος

κληθησεται

least,

and

shall teach

so 2

♦

men, 1

least

shall be called

εν

τη

βασιλεια

των

ουρανων

ος

δ

αν

ποιηση

και

διδαξη

in

the

kingdom

of the

heavens;

but whoever

♦

♦

shall practise

and

shall teach [them],

ουτος

μεγας

κληθησεται

εν

τη

βασιλεια

των

ουρανων

this [one]

great

shall be called

in

the

kingdom

of the

heavens.

20

λεγω

γαρ

υμιν

οτι

εαν

μη

περισσευση

η

δικαιοσυνη

υμων

For I say

♦

to you,

That

unless

♦

shall abound

♦

righteousness 2

your 1

πλειον

των

γραμματεων

και

φαρισαιων

ου

μη

εισελθητε

εις

την

above [that]

of the

scribes

and

Pharisees,

in no wise

♦

shall ye enter

into

the

βασιλειαν		των		ουρανων
kingdom		of the		heavens.

ηκουσατε

οτι

ερρεθη

τοις

αρχαιοις

ου

φονευσεις

Ye have heard

that

it was said

to the

ancients,

Thou shalt not commit murder;

♦

ος

δ

αν

φονευση

ενοχος

εσται

τη

κρισει

but whoever

♦

♦

shall commit murder,

liable

shall be

to the

judgment.

εγω

δε

λεγω

υμιν

οτι

πας

ο

οργιζομενος

τω

αδελφω

But I

♦

say

to you,

That

every one

who

is angry

with his brother

♦

αυτου

εικη

ενοχος

εσται

τη

κρισει

ος

δ

αν

ειπη

τω

♦

lightly,

liable

shall be

to the

judgment:

but whoever

♦

♦

shall say

to his brother,

αδελφω

αυτου

ρακα

ενοχος

εσται

τω

συνεδριω

ος

δ

αν

ειπη

♦

♦

Raca,

liable

shall be

to the

Sanhedrim:

but whoever

♦

♦

shall say,

μωρε

ενοχος

εσται

εις

την

γεενναν

του

πυρος

Fool,

liable

shall be

to

the

Gehenna

♦

of fire.

εαν

ουν

προσφερης

το

δωρον

σου

επι

το

θυσιαστηριον

κακει

If

therefore

thou shalt offer

thy gift

♦

♦

at

the

altar,

and there

μνησθης

οτι

ο

αδελφος

σου

εχει

τι

κατα

σου

shalt remember

that

thy brother

♦

♦

has

something

against

thee,

αφες

εκει

το

δωρον

σου

εμπροσθεν

του

θυσιαστηριου

και

υπαγε

leave

there

♦

before

the

altar,

and

go away,

πρωτον

διαλλαγηθι

τω

αδελφω

σου

και

τοτε

ελθων

first

be reconciled

to thy brother,

and

then

having come

προσφερε		το		δωρον		σου

ισθι

ευνοων

τω

αντιδικω

σου

ταχυ

εως

οτου

ει

Be

agreeing

with thine adverse party

♦

♦

quickly,

whilst

♦

thou art

εν

τη

οδω

μετ

αυτου

μηποτε

σε

παραδω

ο

αντιδικος

τω

κριτη

και

in

the

way

with

him,

lest

thee 5

deliver 4

judge,

and

κριτης

σε

παραδω

τω

υπηρετη

και

εις

φυλακην

βληθηση

the

judge

thee

deliver

to the

officer,

and

into

prison

thou be cast.

αμην

λεγω

ου

εξελθης

εκειθεν

εως

αν

αποδως

Verily

I say

to thee,

In no wise

♦

shalt thou come out

thence,

until

♦

thou pay

τον		εσχατον		κοδραντην
the		last		kondrantes.

ηκουσατε

οτι

ερρεθη

τοις

αρχαιοις

ου

Ye have heard

that

it was said

to the

ancients,

Thou shalt not commit adultery:

μοιχευσεις
♦

εγω

δε

λεγω

υμιν

οτι

πας

ο

βλεπων

γυναικα

προς

το

but I

♦

say

to you,

that

every one

that

looks upon

a woman

to

the

επιθυμησαι

αυτης

ηδη

εμοιχευσεν

αυτην

εν

τη

καρδια

αυτου

lust after

her,

already

has committed adultery with

her

in

heart 2

δε

ο

οφθαλμος

σου

ο

δεξιος

σκανδαλιζει

σε

εξελε

But if

thine eye,

♦

♦

the

right,

pluck out

cast [it]

from

thee:

for it is profitable

for it is profitable

απολυση

γυναικα

αυτου

δοτω

It was said

also

that

whoever

shall put away

his wife,

♦

♦

let him give

αυτη		αποστασιον
to her		a letter of divorce:

εγω

δε

λεγω

υμιν

οτι

ος

αν

απολυση

την

γυναικα

αυτου

but I

♦

say

to you,

that

whoever

♦

shall put away

his wife,

♦

♦

παρεκτος

λογου

πορνειας

ποιει

αυτην

μοιχασθαι

και

ος

εαν

except

on account

of fornication,

causes

her

to commit adultery;

and

whoever

♦

απολελυμενην		γαμηση		μοιχαται
her who has put away		shall marry,		commits adultery.

παλιν

ηκουσατε

οτι

ερρεθη

τοις

αρχαιοις

ουκ

Again,

ye have heard

that

it was said

to the

ancients,

Thou shalt not forswear thyself,

επιορκησεις

αποδωσεις

δε

τω

κυριω

τους

ορκους

σου

but thou shalt render

♦

to the

Lord

thine oaths.

♦

♦

εγω

δε

λεγω

υμιν

μη

ομοσαι

ολως

μητε

εν

τω

ουρανω

οτι

to you

not

to swear

at all,

neither

by

the

heaven,

because [the]

θρονος		εστιν		του		θεου
throne		it is		♦		of God;

υποποδιον

εστιν

ποδων

αυτου

μητε

εις

nor

by

the

earth,

because

[the] footstool

it is

of his feet:

nor

by

ιεροσολυμα

οτι

πολις

εστιν

του

μεγαλου

βασιλεως

Jerusalem,

because [the]

city

it is

of the

great

King.

μητε

εν

κεφαλη

σου

ομοσης

δυνασαι

Neither

by

thy head

shalt thou swear,

because

thou art not able

♦

μιαν

λευκην

μελαιναν

ποιησαι

one

hair

white

or

black

to make.

λογος

Eye

for

eye,

and

tooth

for

οδοντος
tooth;

εγω

δε

λεγω

υμιν

μη

αντιστηναι

τω

πονηρω

αλλ

οστις

σε

but I

say

to you

not

to resist

♦

evil;

but

whosoever

thee

ραπισει

επι

την

δεξιαν

σου

σιαγονα

στρεψον

αυτω

και

την

αλλην

shall strike

on

thy right

♦

♦

cheek,

turn

to him

also

the

other;

και

τω

θελοντι

σοι

κριθηναι

και

τον

χιτωνα

σου

λαβειν

and

to him who

would

with thee

got to law

and

thy tunic

♦

♦

take,

αφες		αυτω		και		το		ιματιον
yield		to him		also [thy]		♦		cloak;

και

οστις

σε

αγγαρευσει

μιλιον

εν

υπαγε

μετ

αυτου

δυο

and

whosoever

thee

will compel to go

τω

αιτουντι

σε

διδου

και

τον

θελοντα

απο

σου

To him who

asks of

thee

give;

and

him that wishes

from

thee

δανεισασθαι		μη		αποστραφης
to borrow		thou shalt not turn away from.		♦

ηκουσατε

οτι

ερρεθη

αγαπησεις

τον

πλησιον

σου

και

Ye have heard

that

it was said,

Thou shalt love

thy neighbour

♦

and

μισησεις		τον		εχθρον		σου
hate		thine enemy.		♦		♦

44

εγω

δε

λεγω

υμιν

αγαπατε

τους

εχθρους

υμων

ευλογειτε

τους

But I

say

to you,

Love

♦

bless

those who

καταρωμενους

υμας

καλως

ποιειτε

τους

μισουντας

υμας

και

curse

you,

to those who

hate

you,

and

προσευχεσθε

υπερ

των

επηρεαζοντων

υμας

διωκοντων

υμας

pray

for

those who

despitefully use

you

and

persecute

you;

οπως

γενησθε

υιοι

πατρος

υμων

ουρανοις

οτι

so that

ye may be

sons

of your Father

[is] in

[the] heavens:

his sun

he causes to rise

on

evil

and

good,

and

sends rain

on		just		and		unjust.

αγαπωντας

μισθον

For if

you,

what

reward

have ye?
